Turbo Thoughts? Do I need more air?

Postby Bschwarzli » Wed Jul 07, 2010 7:36 am

So, it appears I will be towing a 10K lbs trailer to BC this fall with the 1990. Two thoughts come to mind. Fix all the issues, and fix and not yet issues!

The way my motor is currently set up, I get 31 PSI WOT, and put down 273/650 on the dyno. My question is when I start pulling through mountains and get into the long grades at high altitudes, do you think I will have an issue with EGT's? I have not towed enough yet with this power level to know what my EGT will be under load like that. I have pulled that trailer a few times so far and 1200 was seen on decent hills but...

Thoughts? Should I be dialing back the fuel pin or is it time to put the HX35 on? I dont want more power as the clutch wont take too much more...

I dont want to be doing 40 mph up the side of the hills, but I do not want to bake the motor either...

Help!

Motor is stock except for banks intercooler, 60 psi intake and exhaust springs, 4" full exhaust turbo back, and fuel screw.

more/better/cooler air is never bad and i would say it cant hurt with the setup you have. i would also think it would help mileage and you be a lot less likely to drop piston count by one or two.

here is no reazon whyyou cant run 4th gear wile towing up a mouton

the 18wheelers do it all the time --- if the EGTs get to hi they just start dropping gears

you have a cummins that racing guys rev to 5,000rpms with out the rods coming apart --- so there is no reazon why you can't spin that crank at 2,500rpms all day long

( clif notes ) if in dout drop a gear and let the exhoust screem --- well that is what I do for all my cars and motorcycles ( have you ever hurd a 300HP 4cylender saturn with 3inch turbo back exhoust at 6,500 rpm ruing 120mph in 4th gear ???? well it sounds like the world is coming to a end ! )

hx35 isnt enough of an upgrade to warrant the time/expense, I really like my he351ve. They are cheap and not bad to tune in to your needs.

Maybe you should put in a valet switch to take out some fuel when you're going up hills. I know I have to slow down when towing up in the mountains and I wasn't even towing that heavy. I don't have a valet switch though. I want to put one in myself one of these days.

I pulled a car and car hauler (4500-5000 lbs) up the east side of the Bighorns a few weeks ago and had to slow down to about 50-55 mph in 3rd. I got passed by a 3rd gen too.
