Gauges installed, Dont like the numbers!!

Postby jwrkansas » Wed Jul 14, 2010 9:14 pm

Got my autometers installed tonight and took the truck for a quick spin. Suprised to see that the baby h1c can hit 38psi!!! Also saw the pyro headed towards 1600 so I let off. Cant believe that with minor pump tweaks that this truck can get so hot so fast. Guess its turbo time!!

Yeah, I drove it to work today and was looking at the numbers. At 70 its running about 900 at 8psi. Accelerating hard the pyro shoots up faster than the boost gauge!! I've got an hx35 i have been planning on installing, do you guys think it will help at all?

Some...

At 38 psi you're pumping hot air. The H1C really isn't good much above 30 psi - gets out of it effiency curve.
The '35 will flow more and since you have it why not use it. AND if it's got a wastegate - use it. Set it about 32 and I think you'll see your egt's drop a little.
You're still looking at a 3" exhaust and when you get $$$ I'd go to a Super '40 or an S300 with a full 4" exhaust. That's when you'll see better performance and lower egt's.

Whats a normal cruise number? At 65-70 this thing is around 900-1000 unloaded and with minimal throttle. This seems way too high for an engine that really doesnt have anything done so to speak.

Check your lift pump output, adjust your valves if it hasnt been done in the last 50K, and get your injectors checked. All those can lead to high EGTs. ALso check the air filter, and put a gauge in the pump to check timing.

Stock timing (1.4mm) on a nonIC truck isnt as bad as some make it out to be; 1.5-1.6mm is as far as i'd go with stock sticks and pump internals. These engines were actually built for performance, not emissions like the IC'd trucks were.

FWIW, I think my nonIC 91 D350 ran about 750-800 on the flat at 70, Getrag and 4.10s. At 60, it cooled to about 650. Dont remember what boost was- 5-7psi, maybe? I put a PDR HX35 on mine, and had to get into it hard at low RPM to see 1500. Boost pegged a 40psi gauge.

dpuckett,
That's about what I run on the hiway, but the EGT's scare the hell out of me on WOT runs.
I hit 1600* plus just before I get to the end of a 1/4.

That's with the fuel screw backed down 2 turns from runaway.
'Course the way my 4" corkscrews I'm sure my exhaust is not the most freeflowing -
on the other hand it's LOTS better than the 3" ever was - or could be.

I did have the DP separate from the rest once and besides a beautiful whistle from the turbo my EGT's dropped ~ 150*.
But that was at part throttle, I wasn't about to go WOT downtown with all the buldings to echo off -
That might've been pushing my luck too far as a cop really gave me a hard stare as I crossed an intersection

At 70 mph i'm running around 700 degrees, of course I have a 2wd not a 4x4 and that all depends on how much head wind there is.

Oh y'all are going to hate me now. We just put a Getrag in Mom's truck, (D350 club cab, 3.54), and running 68-70mph on the flat with no headwind, 100+ ambient temps, it runs around 575-600, and about 3-5psi boost.

Mine runs about 750 to 800* at 75 mph on the way to SOP. It's pretty consistant too. About 2-3 psi of boost.

What's up with the boost numbers! At 70-75 I'm running 18-22 lbs of boost? Of course I'm sure I am killing my tired old motor and have no pyro hooked up so can't tell EGTs. I do have a gauge...do they require power? I have the probe in and hooked to the gauge but it doesn't work...power to the studs?

JB, 370's, maxed pump, 3200 spring, LPPP, 60mm wheel on the turbo, 16cm housing, PDR I/C. And probably some other small goodies I can't remember.

Larry, not quite, hills go up, boost and EGT'S go up, hill goes down, speed goes up!
