Question about Parker's truck

Postby peobryant » Sun Aug 01, 2010 9:49 pm

Hello everyone, this is Dallas. Parker constantly talks about you guys and this site and he uses the same password for everything, so I thought I'd surprise him since he's been constantly busy lately. Between working 2 jobs, trying to figure out what is wrong with my car and raising his son he hardly has time for anything anymore. I'm trying to figure out how to help him in anyway possible, so I'm turning to you. ;)

The problem he has been having has been going on for a while now. He is acting like it is happening more often now, but he doesn't have the time to do anything to his truck now. I think he has posted about it here before but I'm not sure. Every now and then the speedometer will quite working, and then he'll yell about how overdrive (I think) won't work. He always says something about the vss and mentions something about a pentiometer (sp?) and I'm wondering what these are and how I can get them for him.

I do know the pentiometer thing is a mod (he has kind of explained it to me) but I really want to know as much information about it as possible, so I can possibly fix his truck or have someone else do it. He said something about it being a nob you put on the dash or something. Anything you can do to help will be really appreciated.

Thank you,

Dallas

I'm not sure where you would get a new VSS from but the potentiometer can be ordered from dnrcustoms.com. Or you can buy the parts from radioshack.

Dallas, you should be able to puck up a VSS at any local parts store Napa,Federated, probly wouldn't
go to the big chain discount ones, just one of your localy owned store, the VSS fits more than
our trucks, like dakotas also. around $50.00 i think, you could probly do the pot, go to the
search box in the uper right of the blue box and look around, put in VSS install let us know if you need help
thats what were here for. :D

If it works sporadically, I'd say it's more a wiring issue than the VSS itself- normally they go haywire or quit altogether. My mom's had a crack in the wiring going to the VSS a few years back, giving it the same symptoms you describe. I'll have to think back and remember how I came to the conclusion it was in the wiring. I'll get back with you on that.

Now the post in the trucks for sale section makes more sense. I thought Parker and Begle had been smoking out of the same pipe for a minute.

My truck was also sporadic, one time it would work one time it wouldn't, and it stoped messin up with the replacement
of the VSS, so it could more than one thing, just what you wanted to here right. :(

I had to replace my VSS due to gunk/age. It fluctuated between 10-85 in reverse and had me doing 60+ in first gear on cold mornings. As always, your local price may vary from here in San Antone.

Advance Auto
Dorman#970-012 $22.59
BWD#S8025 $30.79
Pep Boys#S8025 $36.99
NAPA #ECH VSS100 $52.49
Oreilly# 2VSS7 $34.95

There is a good article DTR's sticky about how to do the potentiometer.

Good luck on helping with Parker's truck.
