newbie needs advice

Postby Whitey Ford » Tue Aug 24, 2010 7:16 pm

Hi guys its been a while since I have been on here - working like crazy. Wanted to get some opinions on doing some mods on my truck. 92 w250 4x4 auto but it has 556890 km's on it. Want to know from the fellas in the know if I am good to go ahead to perform some mods or should I refrain due to the milage. Mechanic says it has slightly lower compression after start up for about 20 - 30 secs and then its all good. Once again- I am not mechanically inclined to the extent of most of you guys - and this is my first diesel. Any tips/hints or comments send them over they will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Fellas

If it is needed for heavy work or for a dailey driver leave it alone. If its an extra truck or a toy, mod away. I have 1 truck that does work some so I kept that one stock. The other 2 do not need to earn there keep and are not a primary truck. Those have 300 hp each. :D

Somebody please for the love of peanut butter convert that to miles.

Mines got a bunch of miles on it and its ok with small pump mods. Fuel pin turned almost to deepest part and about a turn on the fuel screw. I bumped up the timing after that and it cooled the egts down to about normal when just riding. Pullin is another story. It likes to run 950 to 1000 pullin a 19 foot trailer and a 50 hp kubota and 6 foot bush hog at about 70. So I'd more than likly do as mr richie o.

I do daily drive my truck, it hauls a camper with a 24' trailer full of toys for the sand and I have done the mods in my sig the only thing that has altered my mpg is my right foot.I average 20mpg unloaded and about 14mpg with 20,000lbs dont think thats out of line and its not a truely accurate number because I put 33" tires on it and never corrected the speedo. I do need to do the head gasket as it is seeping water under the thermostat housing but at 340,000 miles I would think the gasket is just old and rotting, nothing to do with mods. My .02 do simple mods, the 366 spring, an aftermarket fuel pin the lift pump and first and foremost GAUGES!!

Just divide the 556k miles by 2.2. Or cheat like I do and divide by 2, that's close enough. ;)

I think the 1 - 2.2 is for converting lbs to kg's
Kilometers to miles is 1.6 kms to 1 mile

could be wrong - been a long time since I was in school haha

Jeez you're right! I must not have had enough beer! I do actually cut miles by half and call it good though, close enough for me!

Mines got 831k, Ive turned the full power screw up, bd fuel pin, K&N air filter, 3" down pipe w/4" exhaust and bd turbo housing (16cm), it pulls even with a 06 cummins mega cab dually in tow mode with a bunch of mods. Anyways its a daily for work, Ive towed a couple times with it, and never any issue, my truck was a one owner though and kept in good shape mechanically, never let me down, but! I cant see you not being able to turn it up, and givin er here and there, but drive it nicely for the most part and have it be reliable with a decent amount of power, how are the autos for reliablity? My getrag is solid, and according to the original owner still running the factory clutch!
'92 W250, 5spd, reg. cab, 2" lift, 4" dp, 4"exhaust no muffler, smoke screw bottomed out, star wheel bottomed out, full power screw maxed, BD fuel pin, BD 16cm housing (30psi), K&N air filter with a modified factory air box
