Is this turbo usable?

Postby Mark Nixon » Tue Aug 24, 2010 1:27 pm

I have a few parts to assemble a turbo, but wondering if it'll be usable.

I have a WH1C with a 14cm gated housing.
I also have a 6 blade, 80 MM compressor wheel and a machined housing for an H1C.

What'll this thing push for air and is it practical?
Will it work okay on a '90 non-intercooled engine?

Mark.

80mm on a WH1C. Interesting. That will move a lot of air if the turban side can drive it efficiently. I have my doubts, but you won't know until you try it.
RIP 91.5 W250 5 speed. The great experiment.

I think you mite be able to spool it from now till some time next week, and if you lift off the throtle
quick i think you could twist your shaft off, but thats my opinion and i don't clam to know much
about mis-matchin turbos.

I wish to re-state myself on the wheel size.
It is actually a 6 blade 60mm wheel.
I was informed that I measured it wrong and that it's measured on the smaller end.

Anyhoo, think it'll tow for poo?

That would be like my GDS 60mm (H1E wheel) upgrade. Works great for towing with my other mods. I don't have the fuel screw maxed out so my EGTs are good. The 14 housing will spool faster but I have no problem with the 16.

Now i do know a little about a 60mm wheel, as i just put one on my truck and with all my
mods and my pump is very close to runaway with all the screws maxed out and my egt's while
towing 14,000lbs last weekend on leavel road with a few hills never reached 900*, and on a WOT
run i can hit 1250*, I'm tickled pink about that.

I can do the same as Rich and I only have 370's. Same wheel and ex housing, but my fuel screw is bottomed out.

Mark, nice avatar, is that your new GF?

So, what SHOULD I expect for EGTs and PSI from that turbo with a moderate tune to the pump, and stock non-intercooled sticks?

Pete, that's Dan Halen, an evil little mogul from a cartoon series I get a kick out of.

I think close to what Dar gets, maybe a little warmer. I know when I put mine in it made a big difference in EGT's, I lost maybe 1-200*. If I back my fuel screw out it gets a little better. If I keep it under 3k rpm it only goes just above 1200*, above 3k it climbs just as fast as the tach to 3500 rpms.

I'm not pushing tons of fuel. I'm only at 300 hp. I have 4 more turns left on the screw. :D

Richie the only reason i can think of for your high EGT's is maybe a P/S intercooler and tims tubs
might help, i know till i got all three things installed i could fly by 1500* three beeing 60mm, I/C
and tubs. heck i don't know. i can still roll some major coal and hays like a by god.

Hate to butt in but I gotta question. I'm gonna buy another HX35 with a 16cm exhaust housin and I was wonderin how it would act on my truck with the simple adjustments in my sig. Now with my H1C pullin 12 to 13000 pounds behind me I can hit 1100 degrees at about half throtle up hill. Cruise with the same load on flat ground I see 8 to 950. One more question what would be the max pressure be that it can put out without problems.
