injector sticking open for the 3rd time

Postby IowaCummins » Tue Aug 24, 2010 10:40 pm

alright here is what i have been dealing with. December i purchased a set of brand new 5x .012 injectors. my diesel shop guys gave me two copper washers per injector because he said something they don't make a thickness that they require to be correctly in the piston bowl. so ran those like that for quite a while. head gasket went south so put in the .010" thicker gasket and installed same washers and truck drove like crap wouldn't have any power. got to thinking about it and figured thicker gasket means further outta the bowl. so pulled one washer and installed again. ran awesome ran like that till about 2 1/2 months ago. that is when i developed a miss at idle and rpm. at idle it would seep fuel out of the #1 exhaust port figured the injector was stuck open so pulled all 6 and took em to my diesel guy. 5 were really sticky and 1 was stuck open. he replaced one and cleaned the others. at that time i was running powerservice every tank. put em in, truck ran like a top. that is until the following week when it developed another miss. this time it was #2. pulled that injector and had my guy look at it. it was stuck so he replaced that one too. due to all the problems i pulled my tank and thoroughly cleaned the tank and ran 1/2" fuel lines holley blue pump and 10 micron filter then a 3 micron filter straight to the IP and then i started to run stanadyne fuel treatment. truck ran awesome for 3.5 weeks put on about 2700 miles during that time. well #3 stuck open on me Friday night and now my guy is basically saying its not his stuff its my fuel. well he has said that every time but has just gave me new injectors under warranty. so this time im having my fuel tested for contaminants and biojunks. fuel i get is from the same station for 2 years straight and the occasional out of town trips but always stick to high volume big stations. the guys i talked to today at a local oil lab are also having a hard time its fuel quality that is screwing up my injectors. but pretty much i am getting sick of my truck being down 1.5 weeks at a time and the fuel i am buying to drive to the shop every time this happens, also the oil i have to replace due to fuel contamination. so guys what can this be? currently it hasn't been a repeat in cylinder its been different every time. other wise i would think valve train possibility or IP issues. anything guys? the guy i go to for all this is a great guy and i don't want to tell him his product is junk but idk what else to do? im pretty sure he is getting fed up with my truck doing this but its nothing im doing i don't think, but really after putting how many hours and money into is i can see why he would be this way. but i just cant have my truck down like this every other couple weeks ya know. sorry for the extremely long thread but the frustration i have had is way more so any thoughts or previous experiences would help

I know its apples to oranges but I had 91 F350 w/7.3 that did the same thing w/ its injectors. I ended up changing injection shops, another set from diff people. Ran it another two years. I still buy from them ,good people, but I think they just got bad parts to rebuild thoughs injectors with. Idk about aftermarket fancy injectors.

I would switch injection shops, sounds like that is the only thing left that it could be.

If you have a set of stock or other injectors, throw those in and run it with no extra additives and the same tank of fuel. Since you have added new and better filters and get fuel at reputable shops, I'd say injectors also.
And the problems didn't start until you got those injectors, right?

It seems like I remember someone saying that Red Oak injectors are garbage on here. Are the injectors you are talking about Red Oak?

thats the thing i dont want to really switch shops cause these guys are awesome and have seen lots of injectors come out of his shop and seen the trucks that run them. they have no problems at all its just my set that is doing this.
it happened a few months after i received the injectors.
And yes "Smokem" and i got into it cause he called the injectors junk, and i honestly dont think he sells junk. its like i dont want to put out a bad name for one set of injectors cause these are great people and do great service and just dont want to give them a bad name.
i would run some stock sticks but i turned them in as cores.
i am really thinking about purchasing a set from JKidd something like the 6x.016s.
well fuel tests should be done tomorrow at nebraska machinery company. but i also have a algae test going on at home also and so far no growths have popped up. kinda weird sitting on the desk lol

After ur fuel tests come back all clear, should have said if, I would relay that to the shop.
Is this happening to the same holes or is this a diff one every time?

Easy question. When the pintles stck are they sticking from a gummy residue or or they physicaly scuffed and sticking from mechanical damage. If they are gummed up it is from a problem with your fuel. If they are damaged from scuffing or scarring then it is a material or workmanship problem.

oh yeah as soon as i get the info its getting relayed cause both of us are interested in the results.

And KTA i dont really know what the problem was other than sticking open. i know i have 2 maybe 3 that have been totally replaced cause they were "beyond fixing" was the term used so i guess they could have been just scored or even gummed up.

the thing i dont get is how can I keep getting bad fuel? like i stick to one station that is used by hundreds every day, i treat my fuel filter my fuel and I am having the problems? not the thousands of trucks that have never ever seen a sip of fuel treatment or filters changed on a regular basis. but what ever it is i just need to fix it.

oh btw my fuel algae test that i have at home is showing nothing as of now. and mine has been 72.3 hours as of now. we will see what the lab says tho

Update!

NMC just called to let me know that my fuel is bacteria free. they tested it and nothing they found would cause injector problems. said the fuel i had was quality fuel.

called the diesel shop. secretary told me that they would replace one more injector, but on my penny. so im going to go talk to them monday and idk whats going to happen. either i get it replaced by them on there dime or going to ask them where i can buy a good set of injectors. pretty pissed off now but i hope they can keep me happy cause i swear its just my set of injectors that are screwed up.

It is possible the way the nozzles are cut/edm'd they are putting a bunch of side load on the pintle and causing it to want to bind. That would in turn make the pintles scuff and then they would be damaged beyond repair.

I have had a similar problem but not really sticking open they just didn't give me that nice pop to give you a real nice spray pattern it was more of a dribble or droplets out of the injector. In my case I took them apart cleaned them real good and did the following.
I put a small amount of real fine lapping compound on the tip of the needle. Placed it back into the injector and spun the needle with a cordless drill for about 10 seconds. Cleaned and inspected and it worked great. Pop test had a great spray pattern again.
My truck ran great WOT but at idle just seemed to be running rough and a little smoky. It always seams to be the same 2 injectors with the problem and when I take them apart you can tell right away because the needle tips are kind of dirty and black .

alright i called yesterday and stan told me that he was going to give me a brand new set of injectors to put in my truck and see how they do. if they stick again its something with my truck then we start looking into that but if its all good must have been a bad batch of injector bodies or nozzles. but i should be installing these new injectors tomorrow after noon. so im hoping this is the solution cause if im going to be buying a new injection pump and stuff like that i am really thinking of doing a a little injection pump swap. im pretty happy stan is doing this because it shows he is still a stand up guy with excellent customer service. in other words Two thumbs up for stan lol
