I/P tuning questions close to runaway???

Postby rattlebox93 » Sat Oct 02, 2010 9:28 pm

i only had 3200 spring and "pods" before and always had my fuel screw turned all the way in and i never once tried to run away i now have 6x16's and 4200 spring and i just put the motor and and got it running and i just got it started and turned the fuel screw in untill i got my desired idle and left it there but now with the turbo all piped up and everything you can idle it up to a certin point say around 1200-1500 rpm without actually moving the throttle lever any farther it will gradually rev by itself up to about 3000 do i need to take some fuel screw out of it? motor is as stated at the bottom in my signature with fuel pressure around 13-14psi while at operating temp one tooth advanced with the pump backed off all the way

My 89 does the same thing. At around 13 to 1500 it just keeps reving up higher. It just means your getting close to runaway. The change to the 4200 spring may have changed the way the pump reacts.

Mine has been that way for a couple of years. If it was hanging rpm's at no throttle then I would turn it down, but its fine the way it is.

If it takes a long time to return to idle after you let off the pedal, you are very close to runaway. If it snaps back to idle speed when you let off, you're fine.

Yup, mine comes down instant, thats why I left it there. It only takes off after it gets over 1300 or so. No big deal. :D

I'd back it down....I had mine like that for a short amount of time with the 12mm pump, and the truck would start accelerating down hills on the freeway, and I couldn't put it in neutral, or else it would hang. I'd back it down at least a quarter turn.

:D
Mine hangs a bit when I ease off the throttle at around 2,000 rpm until i'm 100% off of the throttle. Thats not scary, whats scary is after I put in the 3200 gsk and was tuning it, it took off all by itself.

Hey guys I did my fuel screw last night and it's bottoming out on something inside the pump it seems! What's the problem? I ran it at the farthest point in and it isn't run away, my idle is higher (no tach tho) but my idle droppes instantly when I rev it. When I'm driving it tho it seems like it isn't wanting to slow down when I let off, is that just because the idle is higher?? Thanks for the help! I'm scared of a runaway when I'm goin down the highway! That would be baaaad! Or is that even possible??

Not all pumps will run away when the screw is bottomed out. My 89 will, but my 93 will not. You will need to lower the idle some so it will stop. :D

Naturally i have a story, when i turned up my pump i had (NOT) done the proper amount of research and turned it a little to far, the next morning i left for work
and noticed that she would go near 60mph without touching the pedal, so i drove around untill i had a plan, i called my daughter and told her to find me a 2x4 and
weight at the barn, when i got home i pulled it back in 4x4 and eased it up against a big oak tree so i could leave it in gear, (i don't dare use the e-brake because my truck is from the north and we all know what happins if you do), and got out and pulled off the intake and killed her, needless to say
i backed it off some. ....the end
