New project race truck

Postby johnelliott52 » Sat Oct 02, 2010 12:17 pm

I have been a 1st gener for a couple of years now and love to consult this forum for any questions I have. Fortunetly most of the questions I have had are already answered so I havent been much of a poster. Now I am working on a strictly "race" truck. Four 1st gens later I am now in a better position to play. I have tweaked on them all a little but nothing like I have in the works for this one. I have a few picture of the work done so far I bought it a fixer upper and it is now well on its way. Its a 1989 5speed bought it for $1800 with a leaking injection pump, blown turbo, missing driverside motor mount, and only 1 brake working. Within the first few days I replaced the motormounts, front rotors, brake pads, driverside caliper, fixed non-working tailights/brake lights, new h1c from a 93 truck, and got it driveable. Now for the good stuff..... (already on) 16x8 powedercoated wheels on the rear with 28x11.5 mickey thompson et streets, 215/65/16 front tires on the cleaned up painted stock wheels, 3in lowering schakles, 5in hood stack, and some Pirate diesel stickers..... (going on next week) big water meth kit, 60mm gds, 16cm housing, brand new injection pump flow benched to the maximum fuel screw, 3/8in fuel lines from intank draw straw to pump, holley blue for lift pump, pump to head, boost gauge, and egt gauge..... Depending on how all of this goes, what you guys think about it, and if I am happy with the outcome then I will asses the next steps to take. Let me know what yall think and I will try to get some more pictures of the truck and goodies.

Thanks for listening to me babble...

4k rpm spring
60lbs valve springs

That should give you a LOT more fun.

When you finish you list of mods the clutch will be on the very edge.

Yeah I know im tempting fate with the clutch. Theres a company in town that I talked to and said they could build me one for a fairly decent price with ceramic buttons, might be a little grabby but the truck was made to raise cain in anyways. I thought about the valve springs and 4k spring, they're so reasonably priced its almost a must. How does the pump feel about being spun to 4k though? Im gonna be locktighting the front seal of the pump and run 14psi inlet pressure so that might help keep the pump cool. Im also thinking about ddp stage 3s...

dont know how ur going to shift that truck, the rag is going to kill your et's its a proven fact that 2nd and 3rd are one full mile away from eachother, if ur planning on running 4oorpm you may want to go to 1/2inch lines, it would give that holley black some room to push when the IP really needs it, u will really be dieing for some extra fuel above 3000 rpm, MORAL OF THE STORY....make sure there are no restrictions for that IP to get fuel

....cool tires by the way :D

Go big or go home as far as injectors. The stock 4 holers that you have will push 300 easy hp with a standard and into the mid 300's if you have the cool air ( intercooler ) ect. I have a very well balenced set up on my 89 with an auto and I am at 297 to the ground.

With a good clutch and the short 28" tires you could launch in 3rd easy. Try practicing the 2-3 shift with the truck shut off, its easier on parts, lol.

Thanks for all the feed back guys. Thats what im hoping that I can get good at 3rd gear launchs with it being light, Im putting in 2 light weight bucket seats aswell... Im wondering how much water meth is to much though I have 2 m10 injectors flowing ~800cc/m so that makes a total of 1600cc/m. I have a feeling like thats alot of 50/50 mix. I think im just gonna go with a 3200k spring and see how that works. Im not worried about rebuilding it if it explodes, thats what I got the truck for, to push it as far as it can go then when it explodes build it better...

if u want to shif the rag fast go with the 4k spring i believe you would like to wind it up a bit more, expecially if u want to use 5th, u wont bust anything in the engine side... it would be interesting if u got some good times with the rag, if your going to launch in 3rd then your clutch will most certainly die an early death, then if you put in a big clutch the rag wont be happy either, its a towing transmission most certainly not for speed, I know that my trans dosent like to shift because of the rotating mass that the synchros would need to stop IF i decided to try and jam it into gear, hence why matching rpms will be the key to fast shifts in your truck

I'd say a good clutch, and 3rd gear launches against the brakes to build some boost. 12mm pump should be fine at 4K, I'd worry more about the valvesprings. Also be careful with the water/meth, it's as dangerous on parts (or more dangerous) than nitrous in my opinion if you're running too much of it.

Yeah I believe Im going to stick with one 800cc injector to start out and see how it likes it. I was hard at work at the shop most of the morning plumbing up the in-tank pickup, lift pump pre filter, wiring, and installing lift pump. Didn't quite have time get the stock leaking injection pump off so that will have to wait till tomorrow and ill put the pretty new modded on on there. Im also going to try and start with the water/meth install tomorrow, seems like a pretty straight forward install seeing as how I am just running a boost reference switch. JQmile thanks for chiming in, not much longer after I started messing with my first truck you started Rust Bucket definitely on of my favorites. Whats your take on the nitrous-water/meth battle. I know you said you like nitrous better but why more. I figured because my pump wont be putting out the big fuel like the 14mm so water meth would be my efficiency booster. I look as water/meth more as fuel and nitrous as a air/oxygen. Well I think I just talked myself into both of them, best of both worlds...... Just kidding

Looking good. How fast are you wanting to go? Must not be planning on going very fast since you are sticking with the Getrag, GDS upgrade and 12mm VE. Anyhow, good luck.

All this is just a starting point. I wanna upgrade to a 66mm or something along those lines eventually, and I also have a truck with a A518 I was thinking about swaping the 2 seeing as how its my tow vehicle anyways. Its just a few steps at a time. I feel like where Im at now though is a pretty good starting point. The answer to the question about how fast am I planning to go though is: how fast am I not planning to go
