Why are p-pumps evil or taboo or bad?

Postby Scout4life » Tue Oct 19, 2010 1:03 pm

i ask because my truck is developing some blow by, and today i noticed a few drops of oil coming from what i assume is the rear main. i found a running 12v from a 96 for $1500 with 230k. i just wondered why you guys hate the p-pump.

It's just kinda like the FARMALL / JOHN DEERE thing, nothing wrong with them we just like
the ve pump better, so anybody that puts a p-7100 in there 1st gen is a trader.

You'll find similar arguments amongst the VE crowd too. Is it a true VE 1st Gen running a 14mm H/R?

Yes, put in a P-pump and you're a trader. Though I think you meant traitor.

I am certainly not a hater to p-pumpers, just prefer the VE. The VE is by far the under-dog compared to the P-pump, CR, and even the lowly VP when it comes to power. The VE has a couple of advantages over the P-pump but not for all out horsepower. When we talk cheap upgrades here (free), we hit the limits of the turbo, tranny, clutch. With the free upgrades of the P-pump, you WILL melt, burn, break something in the tranny, turbo, engine.

Now, the P-pump is the King of Cummins horsepower, with the current fuel only highest horsepower diesel pick-up is a p-pumper.

Not a hater but a rooter for the under-dog.

If you put a 12cyl pump on it, then it's a real first gen again  P-pumps are for sissies.....

I actually think it is like a small block/big block Chevy battle. Big block chebbies will almost always make more power, but some will still live and breathe small blocks. I like the VE pumps because they're the underdog also, and can put out a good amount of fuel for very little $$$ with a 14mm head.

The reason is because the VE is the original equipment IP in the first gen's

I guess it's like you take out the soul of the first gen when you do a P pump swap.

I dunno. I'm just guessing. I am a purist when it comes to the first gen looks, but not the injection pump.

Jon.. i was proud that i spelled trader right, now you scorn me cause i use hillbilly language,

John..thats it its the soul of the first gen truck, thats why i,m partial to the VE,

Richie.. if i was gona race or pull big numbers on a dyno the P-7100 would be my choice also,

I'm not a purest but i do like the thought of making the old truck run good, it's kinda like
me leaving ( at all cost ) the WCFB and the generator on my old 57 chevy, nothing in the
motor or even the cubic was original but when you opened the hood it looked like it. 8) 8)

i just love to prove people wrong. having a truck thats old and looks slow kick your butt in a race is pretty fun to do.
My opinion is that i want to achieve the most i can with what i have properly and on a budget. i really think i will always have a truck that has the VE pump on her. it maybe my weekend warrior that occasionally hits the track to pull a sled or might be the trailer transporter for my 3.0 series pull truck that has a P pump flowin an insane amount of fuel. Oh and that truck will be Square too!

It costs less than 30 bucks for a reseal kit for a VE pump. What's it cost to do a reseal on a P pump?

GSK for a VE, $16. GSK for a P-Pump, $120.
Knowing you can put it in in under an hour, priceless!

I think of having a p-pump in a first gen like doing steroids... No matter how powerful you are, you just don't get the same respect you would have if you had done it the old fashioned way... and they both make your ding-ding small. :D

Well I've got a whole p-pump motor and,god forbid something happen to my VE motor, if something happens its goin in. As long as the VE makes my truck go its all good.
Look at it this way if u want to be stuck at 650 to 700hp then stay with it. If u want to make more then u know where to go.
Me I'll never need more than 250 or 300hp so the ve is fine for me. I'm not there yet but I'm workin on it.

Scout4life- dont panic over a leaking rear main and some blowby. As long as it isnt pouring oil out the downspout, you should be ok, esp if you have topped 300K. If you are still concerned about it, Cummins has a procedure that hooks the truck to a dyno and the engine to a manometer to measure the blowby pressure. Most of these trucks have SOME blowby- it's just the nature of the beast.

The leaking rear main is probably due more to the fact of it being 18-21 years old more than anything else. I've replaced half a dozen rear mains through the years. Its just like brakes and hoses.
