Electric trailer brake control ??

Postby Richie O » Fri Oct 29, 2010 5:52 pm

I need to get a good trailer controller for the 92. I have a 3 axle gooseneck trailer and with these junk brakes on the truck I need all the help I can get. I really want an old school controller that taps into the brake line. I have one in my 89 and I have an old one here out of my gramps old 78 chebby. I want to keep the one in the 89 and don't really trust the old one. So, my question is. What do you guys use?? I see they make 3 different electronic ones. Delayed, triple axis, and pendulum type. What have you??

U don't want one that "sences" how you are stoping. I hated it driving in town. I have one now that you set however you want. Apply speed and force are taylored by you for your needs. Can't remember the dang brand though.

This is like mine only diff is mine displays a % of force. It is one of few things I've got from autozone that has lasted.

I have a cheap one in there now, but I don't think its rated for 3 axles. I suspect only 2. I have not even hooked up to the trailer with it yet so I am not sure how or if it will work with the extra brakes. I have to install relays, rewire the rear of the truck and trailer connections ect. I need to get the wires up to snuff or I know there will be issues. There are like 18 lights on the thing. :D

The relay is to get the load of all the rear truck lights as well as all the trailer lights off from the headlight switch. If I don't then it will burn it up for sure. ( and all the wires and plugs too )

Never thought about that. Guess really never had it happen. My 30 foot dovetail trailmaster has LEDs and the four horse slant Excess trailer does as well. I had a 19 foot dove that had regular lights on it but there was only six. Front middle and tail on each side. Only prob I have had was flashers. The blinkers would hardly stay on. Looked like a strob flash a take forever to come back on. Good thought MrRichie. Is the relay just for the park lamps?

Lots of guys also put the headlights on relays as well. 1 for high and 1 for low. Some also put the " high " setting of the heater motor on one as well. Those are all good ideas. I have never taken the time to do it but if this thing is going to be a tow pig I think I will do some updating. As the contacts age it becomes more of a problem. I have had a heater fan switch burn up due to bad contacts. Melted the hell out of it. I think for now it will be just the rear parking and trailer parking/marker lights.

Ya the headlights on my truck are on relays. I bought some of those silverstar head lights and it all went to hell from there.

I have a Prodigy and love it to death. The best ones are the Maxbrake and another the same type, I can't remember it's name. On those a sensor goes in the brake line and the controller applies the brakes as pressure is applied to the truck. Really big money though.
I think I paid about $40 for the prodigy, I found them cheap on e-bay. It has a standard setting that you set to begin with, then a tap on the boost button and you get 3 harder boost settings above the standard.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
