Newb help from australia

Postby turbogu » Mon Nov 01, 2010 3:24 pm

Hey all,

This is my first post on here after a lot of reading so take it easy on me!!!

Im after some help from you guys with my project down here in australia and seen as how its about the ve ip i thought this was the best place to post it

Im building up a 2001 nissan patrol wagon with a 4.2l 6 cylinder diesel, kinda like a mini cummins and i wanna have a crack at building my own pump, now im a mechanic by trade but not a diesel specialist so i know a bit about what im doing,

Ive read as much a i can on here, and cummins forum and the vw sites for pump info so no that brings me to you guys

The pump my motor runs is the same type of ve as yours except it only runs a 10mm r/h and i wanna throw a 12mm in it as the motor is being pumped up a fair bit, the pump shops down here charge $3000 plus to do these mods which is rediculous

Sooooo.... (im getting there, bear with me!!)

Im after a pump with a 12mm h/r i can strip and use the parts in mine, is there any one on here that has a cheap bone yard pump they would be interested in selling me and shipping to aus, obviously ill pay all cost, ( pay pal is easy for me but can work with who ever to sort out what there comfortable with)

the plan is to use the r/h from the cummins pump, my cam plate to make it work, and if they are the same size probably a bd fuel pin and i guess any other mods i can find on here or what ever you guys tell me i should or shouldnt do

Cheaper the better incase it goes belly up on me, and one with the boost compenstaor/ diaphragm on the top plate would be even better but not important as thats something i can get down here easier that the r/h

thats it, im done, if any one can help out i would be forever in your debt and buy you a beer if you ever land in aussie soil

either pm me or reply here or my email is griggs.sean1@bigpond.com

Cheers all

Hello Sean!

Sounds like a great build!

Now do you want the pump top or the H&R?

Hi Sean! Another place to check might be
www.4btswaps.com

They play with that 4 banger stuff all the time and there's a better chance of scoring a 4 cylinder pump on there. Good luck on your project! 8)

The tops are the same, and pretty sure most of the innards too.

Pete he's working on an Inline 6.

Turbogu, What mounting flange does your 4.2 have?? Could you just bolt on a VE from a 6bt? Or do you have some sort of reverse rotation or reverse mounted pump?

Hey mate, it has the 3 bolt flange like your pumps do, the thought did cross my mind about using the whole pump. guess i need one infront of me to work that out

the main difference i can see is mine bolts to the right side of the block where as yours is on the left so i may need to juggle the throttle linkages abit to swap them around but shouldnt be too hard

BUt time will tell, i just to get my hands on one of the pumps and go fromt there

Most of this VE pump stuff is pretty interchangeable. I have put vw stuff on cummins pumps and visa versa. Fuel pins from vw's into toyota hilux's. 4bt h&r's into vw pumps. Pugeot pump tops onto vw's, ect... Find a couple pumps and have at it.

Big thing is some turn clockwise and some turn counter clockwise, and idi's have different cam-plate profiles the di's. Though I have seen di plates used in idi apps. (4bt into vw)

Thanks dvst8tr,

Our motors are idi's so that will be some thing to take into account

its amazing, you guys will talk about whats done to pumps like its nothing yet down here a pump builder will tell you squat, just that its years of research, playing around blah blah blah

and in a few weeks of reading ive found most of what i need to know

cheers all for your help so far and bring on the wreck pumps!!!

In my experiance I have found that the IC DVs are bigger but others will tell you that there smaller so who knows, I just speak from my presonal experiance.

The DV holders are longer on a N/IC pump and I believe the internal oriface is slightly larger as well.

Does anyone know if the camplate has a different profile between the two?

KSB is an abbreviation of a German work I cannot pronounce, It is your cold start timing advance. Some industrial pumps dont have a KSB.

The reason pump builders won't tell you anything is because they want to get paid. I probably speak for most peaple hear but most of us have learned the same way you are, by reading and tearing stuff apart, except for Richie who is to afraid to even attempt a governor spring install

I may not know how to install a gov spring, but I sure know where the " DELETE USER " button is in the administrators tool box.
