91 wrecker resto

Postby Cschafer » Thu Dec 09, 2010 7:37 am

Finally got the wrecker ready for service. Thought i'd put a few pics up. Trucks a 91 non intercooled getreg 4wd. The frame was extended for the wrecker and fish plated from cab back with 3/8 plate. Took a few months but it's coming out pretty good. Got new fenders, one door, other got the bottom replaced, cab corners, rockers, floor boards and cab supports. Bed got completely sand blasted and single stage paint. The cab and sides are base and clear coat. The flames are airbrushed then cleared over. Still have to put flares on it and put the duelly hubs up front.

Thanks guy's I've never tried so hard to make a first gen quiet and nice inside before. It's alot of work! But my competition has new f550 wreckers so I can't have the customers hateing my old, loud clunker. It's pretty nice to drive now though, can talk on the phone at 70 mph! Pete don't think i'm going anyware for a long time unless it's out of state to work and this old girl will be in service 24/7. Wanted to bring it down to sop but didn't get it done in time. Next is the rollback. I picked up another 91, intercooled though and a 17.5 flatbed to go on it. It's another rust bucket but it's already blue and silver so I don't have to jamb in everything!

hey if my truck / car broke down way out yonder wherever your at, i would rather get towed by your 1st gen than the f550. But thats just me.

Lemme ask, im guessing you changed all the weatherstripping to quiet the cab down on the highway? But what did you do to get rid of the rough ride? Thats the one thing i hate most about my truck the new ones ride soooo much better especially the chevys with torsion bars. Or the newer dodges with front coils. I thought my 78 chevy K20 rode rough, untill I bought this POS 93 it rides like a mack dump truck.

The wrecker body I bet helps the ride because of the weight.

Weighs 10,500 and the front springs are worn out so it rides good lol. As for a normal first gen... Soft ride springs in the front and take 4 leaves out of the back use bags for towing. We are 4 linking my buddies 91 soon and using airbags. Hopefully that will completly fix the ride issue.

I'm in Mt. Pleasant, MI. Were are you located at?

Oh im way over here in CT... around here you would probably never see that. For wreckers everybody usually uses the fords and once in a while you catch a chevy 3500. For flatbeds its mostly hino's or international. One place I know of has a kodiak flatbed w/ duramax motor, that thing is sick iv seen the kid light all 4 rear tires unloaded
