no cruise

Postby little doug » Fri Dec 10, 2010 12:24 am

I've been trying to figure out why my cruise controll doesn't work. I have checked the switch adjustment on the brake pedal, the throttle controll cable, and the vaccume(feels good, but need to hook up a guage still).

My question is this,is there a part, that fails most? what whould be best to check next. Does anybody have parts to sell once I determine the problem?

Thanks,
Doug

Number 1, we need the YEAR of the vehicle.
We also need to know if there is anything else that is not functioning, like the speedometer or (if equipped) overdrive unit, on an automatic.

Hi Mark.

The truck is a early 91. I took the adapter off the speedo cable,so now it is steady but reads 55 when going 65.(The speedo was all over the place before I took the adapter off. Its a 5 speed truck. Oh yea,the fuse isn't blown to the speed controll.

Thanks
Doug

Does your horn work?
Could be the clockspring under the steering wheel is bad.

It sounds like the ratio adaptor has shot craps, which is why the speedo was erratic.
What gear ratio do you have in the rear end?

Yes,the horn works. It has a 3.54 ratio...

The reason the cruise control isn't working is likely in the cruise control unit itself, or in the clockspring assembly.
The steering wheel switch assembly could also be malfunctioning.

To correct the speedo reading, you'll need a good (new or used) adaptor like this one:

They are available new, in varying ratios, at this place and are located about a 1/4 of the way down the page:

I may have a good used cruise control module, BUT I would test your switch assembly and clockspring assembly before throwing $$ at a cruise module.

I do also have the switches and/or clockspring, should you need them.
