Body Swap Questions!!

Postby sb91ctd » Thu Dec 23, 2010 1:37 am

Hey guys i know this has probably been asked quite a few times but ive got a few concerns about a body swap from an 85 d150 gasser to my 91 w250 (body is junk obviously). Ive been hearing about the center hump not being able to clear the tranny, will/should all body and bed mounts match up, and my worst fear....the electrical aspect of the swap  . Both trucks are standard cab long bed and both are auto. Even though i havent bought the 85 just yet the chance is pretty decent i will. Any help would be greatly appreciated here.
Thanks guys,
Steve

I'm 99% sure that the body will bolt right on. If your diesel is intercooled, you'll want to swap the rad support from the 91 to the 85. I'm sure someone who has done the swap will give you electrical details and what not..

All the body mounts are in the same locations for the cab way back to the 70's and possibly even earlier. You have to match the center humps for the transmission & transfer case body clearance. This could require cutting and grafting or bolting in the old center hump to the gasser cab. If you cut it properly you can make it removable just like the earlier versions that dodge used before they went into their cost cutting mode.

Bob covered it. I had to cut the hump and put it in the '86 cab. If you have 4x4 or a stick, you get the big hump, 2wd auto, you get the small one. I also had to cut the firewall because I have a stick, the clutch master goes thru where the electrical bulkhead comes thru on the '86. No worries for you though. Cut the hump large on the old cab and the hole small on the new one, then trim both until you get a good fit. It took me about 3 hours to cut the new cab and fit the hump in.
Just pull the harness from the '91 and put it in the other cab. It's not that bad of a job, I was dreading it until I did it, piece of cake!
