power steering pump upset

Postby kwrank » Tue Feb 15, 2011 2:38 pm

howdy--my power steering pump is puking fluid back out the fill cap just after start-up and the first turns on the wheel. it was cold (0 to -25, and the truck had been sitting) the first time, but it has warmed up since. steering is stiff, but workable. after a few miles and some steering use, i can add fluid and it stays put, though the steering stays somewhat stiff. steering box is two years old, w/20k on it. pump is original, 190k. no experience w/any of this, all input greatly appreciated...

I would normally associate that with recently-flushed PS pump. That is not your case, right?

I read on one of these CTD sites about a guy with this problem who slipped a chunk of radiator hose over his PS pump filler...essentially, extending the filler tube upward 6" or so. He was thinking his was a long-term fix.

I put a hose on mine, I'm not sure how long term it is, it's only been on there 18 years. ;-)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
