our plan was to use this truck for a conversion to a 1973 4 door car hauler.

ran a wire to the solinoid> nothing, thinking the contacts are bad ( has been starting fine)
also being a auto and going out of state alot, looks like we need to bring a spare, is the reason for buying another starter

I hate to speak for your OD trans, thought I'm pretty sure the mounting and front half were the same as my 727, but when I did my Getrag swap I kept the same starter. I would think they would be the same, but I can't guarantee it. :|

thanks, doesn't hurt to ask

loooks like i'm going to pull it and look at the solinoid contacts atleast

i just was trying to start the truck "one last time" to warm it up,
pressure wash, then drain all fluids to get ready to remove.

From a thread I authored on another site.
Starter part number cross reference information for folks using Dodge Cummins engines, adapter plates, flywheel housings and etc. NOTE The year of the starter is based on the year of the engine adapter plate being used:

1988-1993
Cummins 3912084
Denso 128000-4910
Lester 17215

1994-2002
Cummins 3921682
Denso 228000-2290
Lester 17548

2003-2006
Cummins 4090084
Denso 428000-1190
Lester 17892

Lester is generally the standard interchange reference number between various manufacturers. Cummins part numbers are generally the most expensive and are subject to frequent change. Denso is the OEM in most cases.

thanks for those numbers :salut:

we are learning, been around diesels> backhoe and tractors, this is our first cummins
the different adapter plates is why i wondered what else would work.

like said only needed to start it "one more time" before removal.

think it was never cleaned in 247,000 miles.

only starter i could find (small town) is a "worldWide" #17003
looks nice, started lots better now.

for anyone that hasn't changed one i used a 10mm 12 point wrench and a 1/4 inch drive 10mm wobble socket to get the
#^&***($%$ bottom bolt near the engine block... :D

i had cleaned the solinoid contact, got it working , but was still draging, looked at the brushes>mostly gone and the armature bushing was shot, so cheaper to get another one.
