Shift Knob

Postby Farmboy » Tue Apr 26, 2011 7:10 am

I just finished up a project for my CNC programming class that I thought I would share with you all... made a brass shift knob for my truck... Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics...

Also I have been toying with the idea of making a couple different designs of shift knobs on my manual lathe I have at home... They would have to be a little more simple than the one I made for class (no ball shapes)... I will attach the drawing I have of a very simple design cut out of aluminum to start off with... I have a couple different ideas sitting in the back of my head but I am open to any other ideas as well... Just wondering if there was any interest before I go out and buy some material...

did you cut it on a cnc lathe then put it in a mill or were you using a 3 axis machine?

love that its brass that makes it much cooler, awesome design

yes I cut it on a CNC lathe and then put it in a CNC mill....

And yes I did save the program... The bad part it that I won't hava access to the cnc mill after next week when the semester is over... so any of the ones I cut on my lathe at home will not be able to have the cummins logo in the top... :( for now... 8)

This is another thought i had... Piston shaped shift knob... the shifter would look like the connecting rod...

The programming for the cummins logo is just straight g code... I used the schools little spectralight machining center... for the profile of the knob I used the big cnc lathe here at work which is conversational programming...

I did some research on material prices and such and came up with a price...

For the Piston Shift Knob:
Aluminum: $55.00
Stainless: $75.00

Comes tapped for M10 x 1.5 internal thread. Shift knob will be 2" in diameter by 2-1/2" lg. Both will be polished before shipping.

Neither price includes shipping, which would be $11.00.
