darn ignition switch

Postby gobigorgohome » Thu Apr 07, 2011 10:58 pm

so im helpin my buddy move and when i got to the old house he lived in i pulled the trk on to the yeard to load up and when it all got loaded he had mentioned that he wanted to drive so i told him the i would like it if he got it rollin a bit before he mashed on it and to not break it. so the first thing that happens when he gets in is hte ignition switch takes a crap and turns all the way to crank and nothing happes lol so now i have a screwderiver ignition lol so it looks like ill just b puttin in a push button next week when i get time lol i have wanted one anyway lol an now is the time. that switch has given me some minor problems off an on since i got it anyhow so i knew it was gonna go soon its all good tho now i can give him a bad time for breakin it lol :D

My switch went out after buying the truck and driving it for about 5 hours. I call the the screw driver starter cowboy anti theft. I am also looking into installing a push button for the starter.

If I jiggle and push on the steering column just right it'll start up.

gobigorgohome, the push button has two terminals on the back, you tap into the large red wire and hook it to one terminal, and i dont understand what you hook to the other terminal

found a wiring diagram, just need to know what the codes are, I am assuming that A1 12RD is 12 gauge wire and is solid red in color, and A2 12 Pk/Bk is black wire with a tracer of purple/pink/i have no idea, I thought Richie had written up something on this, but I cant remember

The A2 12Pk/Bk is a Pink wire with a Black stripe on it. The 1st color is the main and the 2nd is the tracer.

ok, on my trk i cut the solid yellow wire an used the side that comes from th fire wall an connected it to my switch. then i (by mistake) cut the red wire an it would crank but not start an i had no pwr to the dash. so what you need to do is just tap into the red wire an wire that to ur swicth an you will be all good. mine works well been taht way for 3 months or s an the trk is my DD

Not me, I don't purposely ruin wiring.
On the '91-'93, I'd do it the right way and just replace the whole switch assembly, or at least the key tumbler that broke with a good one.
I've only done 10 of them.

On a '91-'93 it would be 30 minutes (TOPS), a $25 switch assembly and a set of tamper proof torx, it'd be done and working.

If it's just the tumbler plug, which it usually is, take the upper column covers off, turn the key and push on the tumbler release and pull the tumbler assembly out, then pop in a replacement.

Mark.
