hawks

Postby meby » Sun Jul 17, 2011 3:36 pm

My research tells me red tail hawks are still protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, but I don't know for certain. Does anybody know if it is illegal to get caught shooting them?

well down here its illegal to shoot one, but we have a law stating that if domestic animals are being threatened its legal to handle the wildlife accordingly, typically wild dogs, coyotes and hawks are on the receiving end of the 30-30

I built a horse rink for a customer and she was afraid to let her little dog outside because there was always a bald eagle looking over her field. It happens.

Just read your location, down here its more frontier justice to handle those situations, Idk about the laws up there, If you arent in a heavily populated area, an empty water bottle over the end of a .22 makes a great silencer

I believe it's against the law to shoot any migratory bird in any state in the lower 48, except
if they are in season, geese, ducks, and other water fowl.

you can't even shoot a starling in ILL.

so looks like it's red tail season to me.

hawks, falcons, eagles, etc are considered raptors and afik its illegal in most states and federally to kill, capture, harass one. pretty stiff fines along with losing gun around here. i hit a beautiful owl in my old truck and although it did break his neck he looked untouched. the taxidermy guy threw a fit and pushed me out the door when i went to have him mounted.

if you take matters into your own hands, do it queitly and keep it to yourself.

Woodsy gumbo MMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm..

same here if you get cought with an eagle feather it can be as much as a $50,000 fine
acording to how cocky you are.

like Daryl said just do it and forget it.

I have a good friend who is a Falconer. They can get you for hitting hawk in a truck and not reporting it.

Best to call the wildlife agency or use the 3 S's. Shoot, Shovel, Shut-UP!

Well. I've got three of them circling over my chickens all day scaring the crap out of them. Haven't lost any to the hawks yet, but I think they got two of our kittens. Now, I would never shoot one, but one did disappear unexpectedly the other day. I suspect lead poisoning.

Somehow I don't get the feeling that it's all that big of a deal.
Birds of Prey appeal to me more than most domesticated critters, anyway.

Mark.
