A/C 101

Postby cmann250 » Mon Aug 01, 2011 5:30 pm

This is my first go-around with A/C, so assume i know nothing. ;)
I've got the HVAC box under the dash half way out because of the mice made a home out of it. I'm following the DTR sticky on it the best i can.
For now, my questions are: How do i safely get the freon out of the lines? and When i take off the coolant lines off, should i have a catch can ready so the coolant doesn't spill on the ground?
Other than that, i'm good for the the time being. THANKS!

The freon you should have removed by a shop or someone with the proper set up. It's illegal to open the lines and let it just float away. Just so you know. ;)
As for the coolant, a catch pan won't hurt a thing. Just loosen the cap to relieve pressure and pull the hoses. If you tip them up just a few drops should run out.
Good luck!

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Thanks!
My guess is that there is actual freon still in the lines, given how long the truck sat (since 03). That's long been off limits, right? So what do i have to do to convert it to 134? Which i think is the modern stuff.

I got the HVAC box out and boy, did those mice have a little party going on in there. I took my dad's 7.3L in and changed the oil and my go-to mechanic/friend set me up to convert to 134a.
I'm in the process of washing out the box. I shop-vac'd it out and i'm trying to get it back together tonight.
So... How much 134a should it take? and Is that a filter in the high pressure line on the passenger side fender? Should i change it?
Thanks :D

it wont take nearly as much 134a as the conversion folks will tell you. i have charged both of mine until the guages read 35 on low side and about 200 on high side @ 1000 rpm and it cools its butt off. it takes less than 2 cans (24 oz.) to reach that level. i dont think you should be concerned with the final amount as much the guage readings and performance of the system.

So you're measuring pressure? That would make more sense than volume
