ABS Light on the message center on

Postby peobryant » Thu Aug 04, 2011 8:40 am

Last night I noticed as I was sitting at a red light the red ABS light and yellow Anti-Lock lights turned on. This has happened a few times before, but after I let off the brake they usually turned off. This time they both stayed on for the remainder of the drive.

I know there is a sensor in the rear axle, or you can unplug the black box behind the glovebox, but I want to know what is the better way of dealing with it. Should I replace the sensor (and if so, where is it? I haven't had a chance to dig around) or should I just use Pete's method and unplug the damn thing?

Help would be appreciated because it annoys me severely to see those lights stuck on.

Thanks

Bypass that abs valve/sensor on rear of truck and unplug the bos from what I've read on here. That seems to fix your issue and improve rear brakes.

X2 on ditching the box. Several things turn those lights on. Could be low vacuum, the ABS valve, proportioning valve, and the list goes on. I'd just be done with it.

I didn't just unplug the box. I bypassed the ABS valve and threw that worthless POS in the scrap bucket and THEN unplugged the box. ;)

My apologies, good sir. :D

What exactly does bypassing the valve entail? Pretty simple job I'm assuming?

Yes, it is. Either buy the 2 fittings and remove the lines from the valve, and connect them with the fittings, or you can run new lines and go straight to the hose connection for the axle. I ran new lines because I blew one out, so I did away with the valve at the same time.
The fitting numbers are listed here onsite in several places. Even the crappy search feature finds them in the top 2 or 3 posts listed.

Before you go tearing anything out, have you bled the brakes through the abs pump? You need to bleed rr, lr, abs pump, rf, and the lf. Get a good amount of fluid through the system because our trucks have really long lines.

Low vacuum pressure also can trip the valve on the drive'rs side fender.
Check that you have good vacuum.
Also, rear brake adjustment has been known to fool with the rear brake pressures and fault the dump valve, which causes the lights to come on.

My flatbed's ABS/brake lights are both on, I suspect the dump valve is stuck, but that truck has the BEST rear brakes I've seen on a Diesel truck in quite a while, so I suspect the valve failed in a good position.

Mark.
