About to buy an '02 Subaru Outback, Opinions?

Well, it's about time I bought a car for Dallas and after quite a bit of looking I think I've found a nice one. It's an '02 Subaru Outback, 137,xxx miles with an automatic tranny. I took her for a test drive today and the tranny shifted perfectly, the engine felt good and the car drove very well.

Now, I'm not to knowledgeable on Subaru's but I've been told that these cars are really reliable and will run forever. I need to know about general maintenance (the carfax shows that it has been maintained it's whole life. It's also been in Kentucky, local, since new) like what should be done if it hasn't already been at 130K miles? Belts, chains, etc...

I know someone on here (Darwin?) has a Scooby, so would you care to share your experience?

The price says $4,950 but talking to my cousin (who works at the dealership) I was told I could get it for $4,000 plus taxes. That little car has really gotten under my skin and it's all I've been able to think about since I drove it.

Did you see where the spark plugs are? My cousin has a pair of them. I do some basic maintenence on them for him sometimes. The spark plugs are right even with the frame, and really suck to get at. He said they're not that great on gas either.
Around here, we usually call them lesbian wagons. If Dallas really likes it, you should be worried.

She liked the Accord we drove earlier better, but with 20,000 more miles and a 2K higher price tag (it was a '98 to boot) I think the Subaru is a better choice. Plus, if she was a lesbian I wouldn't be in the situation I am right now.

I've read the they get around 27-28mpg which isn't terrible, and with gas being about 40 cents cheaper than diesel it makes it that much better.

I would buy one. I see tons of them around here, and they are good in the snow. I may look into one when the old ladys jeep turns to dust.

They are good in the snow! Just get an extra set of rims with agressive snows and you can go a lotta places with them.

sold it after we got hit in the rear for 2,500 less than we paid
and we put 75,000 miles on it. it had 198,00 when we sold it.

it got a consistant 30 mpg on the hwy and 24 in town
great cars.

as soon as this dang VW TDI is paid off i will have another one.

That's good to hear. Was yours an automatic or manual?

I've posted in other forums as well and I've been hearing good things (and the lesbian thing once or twice ) so hopefully Dallas will have herself a nice little car in the next few days. I was looking into getting her a diesel Jetta but damn those things are expensive! I'd love to find one with relatively low mileage in my price range but I know that won't happen anytime soon.

Mine was an auto.

my jetta is a 5spd and a nice little car but we were spoiled by the
subaru already so it didn't have a chance.

the TDI does get worst of 43mpg and best of 49 mpg.
and i just finnished a compleat timming belt, pullys, water pump, replacment
on the TDI.

Parker, I e-mailed my cousin to ask what he gets for gas maileage and he said the one car gets 0, it's broken down! lol

I know around Cincy it is a give in that if you are driving a subaru it was a rainbow sticker and a butch woman driving it. They are good little cars in the snow though. We have a boy up at the college that has a WRX and he is always out playing in the snow with it.

The little WRX/STI's can put some woopin on the "fast" boys right out of the box.

if they were a little more practical i would go for one for shure, of corse they make a turbo
outback also an (XT) model, but there's no way i could leave it stock so i better leave it
alone to.
