Likely most of the scales are off. Even DOT scales, but don't get me started on that. H@ll, I loaded at one place who's scales were almost 10,000 lb different then the place I unloaded at.

Most of the real new scales I go across are pretty close. With in 400 pounds on my empty 28,500 pound triaxle. That being said, some older scales can be way off.

With such dicrepancies in scale calibration, can you fight overweight tickets?

No, the police scales are the ones tickets are written by.

you outta carry around a couple of tractor weights and test the scales with the officer there....I have hauled overweight A LOT down here, the cops seem to be more worried with speeders than overweight trailers, they'd be pulling everyone over if that were the case

Its the commercial police in the suburbans that you have to watch for. They are the scale ones. :D I run around with 1/2 a tank of fuel just to save weight. They overhaul the truck when they stop. Get the creeper out, put on coveralls and get to work. They shake everything. Its usually several thousand dollar fines.

Yes, they know their stuff. They do a very close inspection. Yes, they are dot guys, and do all the accident reconstruction as well for heavy truck crashes. I have thought about doing that for work, but it is the hardest division of the Maine state police to get into. :? They are police in every way, but specialize in commercial enforcememnt.

That depends on the state and the individual officer. Here in Michigan, a couple years ago they gave the state police the same power to inspect big rigs and such as the DOT. And no, these Barney Fife's don't necessarily know anything. :notfair: :bh: :finger:

My w350 was 6450 curb weight. Club cab, Getrag.
Not sure what my shoeing rig weighs loaded up ready to go, but it sure rides rough with the stuff out of the back (I emptied it chasing down leaks into the topper). Makes me think the anvil, tools, and bar stock add 4-500 lbs. May have to find a scale.
In MO, I'm legal up to the weight on my tags- 24k gcvw in my case.
His- 93 W250 club cab LE, auto to Getrag conversion, piston lift pump, 3.54 LSD. 400k+
Hers- 04 QC 4x4. Built auto, Triple Dog, Air Dog. Funny Round truck that aint so quiet.
