white smoke after long idling

Postby fatty » Mon May 09, 2011 8:11 pm

I've noticed recently after idling my pickup for long periods, it blows a lot of white smoke under acceleration. Any ideas what's causing this? Only thing I can think of is that fuel is building up and then it all blows out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSRk1A1C470 This was after idling in line to dyno for about 45 minutes.

So I put some Contagious Diesel 7x12 in last weekend and it's still blowing out a lot of white smoke if I let it idle. Anyone know what's causing this?

Chemically, white smoke is unburned fuel. If you idle it for a long time (45 min seems long to me), wet stacking can occur. Thats when fuel gets hot enough to ignite, but not completely burn, then fuel gets sprayed on it again and you have nice carbon mud in your cylinder

If you turn your EFI live switch to high idle, that fixes it ;)

I figure if semis idle all nite in the winter at a slightly higher RPM, then it's not hurting much. Makes wish i had the hand throttle that came with some of the earlier Getrags

You have to watch letting them idle for extended periods. The fuel washes down the cylinder because they aren't burning hot enough to burn all the fuel being injected. It's not good on the engine.

I just read on another site that Cummins doesn't recommend idling for longer than 3 min. I violate that alot :yuck:

It's not low on oil or water. And it started this after I had my stock injectors cleaned and reset by a Bosch shop.

My 92 is running right now in the yard and its headed out to the woods to winch wood out. Probably will idle a couple hours today. I have never got to uptight about idling as long as the temp stays up some. If the engine cools off cold as some do then its a problem. I haul lobster gear for hours at a time and in some cases when the traps are close to each other the boat will idle all day. Its got over 13000 hours on it.

I didn't used to worry either, in the winter I'd let it idle for a half hour or longer sometimes. But the white smoke is kinda making me worry.

If it started after they reset the injectors, I'd be on my way over there in an instant to see what they're gonna do about it.
If it smoked for the 1st ride, ok. After that, it's obvious something is screwed up.

I thought swapping injectors would have fixed it but it's still doing it so I'm thinking it must be something else.
