Block Heater

I have a 1991 ctd and just started using the block heater this year. Does dodge put circulating systems in from the factory, because mine definitely sounds like its moving coolant. And my buddy has got a 90' but it doesn't make a sound. Any Knowledge? Thanks

When I bought my 92 it came with the factory installed unit and I can hear it as soon as it's plugged in.

Mine makes a hissing/gurguling noise when its getting good and hot, there isn't a circulating system or anything built in, I have taken temp readings on really cold days and its about 100 degress on the right side of the block, and about 55-60 on the left. As far as I know, it's doing it's job, as my truck can be a bear to start without being plugged in when it's getting down to single digits

The coolant circulates thru convection. The heater warms the fluid, which rises, then cold fluid is drawn to the heater, etc. It will even circulate to the heater core sometimes under the right conditions. I plugged my truck in last night, it was 25* this morning. My windows had a slight frost on the top half, and the wifes car windows were completely covered.

Mine would have been gurgling and hissing if it was plugged in last night. It went down to 5 degrees this morning but the old girl fired right up .........not something I would normally do but I had to get to the parts store for a blower motor first thing this morning. My cab is getting quite frosty lately.......winter is a cummin

My truck does not do any of this. It heats but no noises or decent heat. If its plugged it over night and you get in it first thing in the morning,and look at the heat gauge,it bairly gets off the first line. Reckon I need a newer one, or do southern truck get a lower wattage heater?

No it gets in the teen's here and then the moisture from the gulf helps out

Thanks Everybody. Mine will start no matter hold cold without plugging it in, but instant heat is nice sometimes, or should I say slightly warmer than outside heat

Mr. Ellis, they only made 1 wattage heater, fitz all! It may be all coated with gunk which insulates it so it doesn't work as well as it should. Usually they either work, or not. They also don't usually heat it up enough to move the gauge, but it may depend on how cold it is out.

had to replace the plug in end on mine the other night, and got it all changed and it still didnt work... looked where it plugged into the block and it was all melted
