bad starting smoke

Postby 91bluecummins » Mon Dec 05, 2011 6:53 pm

i got a 90 non intercooled truck that ive been working on and the guy i bought it from said the injection pump was bad on it so i got a rebuilt one from acme diesel. When i put it on we started it and it run rough and smoked gray so we bumped the timing. It was right on the mark like the old ip was then we bumped it up 1/8 and it run smooth and little smoke. SO now ive been driving it a little and every time i start it runs kinda rough and whiteish-gray smokes for about 10 mins. And when you give it throttle it makes more and more smoke, then when it runs for a while it clears up. I can hear the grid heater and im getting power to it and the wire to the ksb is hot when started is it supposed to be cause i know that it is suppose the be no power when it kicks on. ive unplugged it and i cant here any diffrence in the motor. Should i try to advance the timing a little more cause i know all pump timing marks are the same. I think it might be off or am i missing something else i should check.
thanks

I think it may be injectors. I know my 93 is the same way but it also has 427,xxx miles on stock injectors.

no offense, but that was kind of a slow start for 22 degrees, lol
i have my pump advanced an 1/8in maybe a little more and before i got my head and injectors redone, it would smoke like/or worse than yours dazed, now that i got my head and injectors redone i have almost no haze at an idle

Mine also has 427,xxx miles on all stock parts except for lift pump on the motor. Sometimes she will fire just fine and fast and others it will start like that. Im still on the factory headgasket according to all the records I have.

Didn't sound like the battery spun it all that fast either. I put a new 1150CCA battery in mine a couple months ago and it made a big difference in cold starts.

It's got a brand new 1100CCA battery in it. My starter has been giving me fits and I have to beat on it sometimes to get it to start.

Dazed you got a cool truck. Hey it started twenty times faster than my buddies 6.5 Chevy starts in 65 degree weather. I think you should consider getting the starter rebuild kit just to get her spinning up faster.
