injectors and turbo?

Postby Force fed » Mon Dec 12, 2011 8:12 pm

This is my first post and I know im beating a dead horse with this post

I have a 93 w250 and the mods are, 4in turbo back, 16cm housing, pump turned up, fuel pin, 366 spring, timing advance 200mi on a built auto trany, stock injectors.

I want put in 40-70 horse injectors, what turbo would be a good match. don't want heat problems. Would the 60mm upgrade do the job? Or would I need like a hx35 and if so where do I get one and will it bolt right up

One more thing, I have a set of none i/c injectors I got from a friend. He said that they are a upgrade from the i/c injectors but won't fit my 93, can I have them machined to fit, and is the power gain worth it?

They're a bigger injector, but they do have a different spray angle. If you're wanting to stay cheap they're a good option, depending on machining price, but there are a lot better injector options out there at this point.

Honestly, it's the same story with the turbo. The compressor upgrade is a good option if you're staying cheap, but there's a lot better options out there if you're willing to spend some money.

Got a budget in mind?

Under 2k, I just didn't want to buy new ones if the none i/c injectors were the same, I was looking at the htt 62/14 turbo didn't know if that's over kill with 70 horse injectors, just looking for about 350 hp, the new trany I got should hold up to that

Is your truck a work truck or is it strictly play? 350rwhp for a work truck is a lot different than for one that won't ever see a trailer.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Super HX40 turbo and it will support 350rwhp with ease, for both work and play. It spools quick and you can find them relatively easy and cheap (last I looked, at least.)

As far as injectors, I've heard the boys over at SDX do some good work but I can't speak from experience.

Are you still running the stock lift pump? That needs to change if you are, either with a low pressure piston pump or FASS and AirDog make systems for our trucks as well.

The Super 40 is a stock turbo for a certain year of 8.3L Cummins. P/N 4031450 from turbo supply. I think it's a t4 manifold and your stock turbo uses a t3, so you'll need an adapter

Here's the link to the dyno thread on here.

viewtopic.php?f=25&t=961

Browse through it and see which setups are capable of meeting your hp goals. Just keep in mind that an over-fueled, under-aired setup may dyno alright, but it won't tow for crap. Just use some common sense and see what's worked so far.

Machine the non-intercooled ones. They are very similar to the POD injectors. I had this done and had to pay 2 hours of shop time.

What do you mean by "built auto"? That will greatly affect the next step.

If it has a nondescript "Heavy Duty" or "RV style" converter, it is trash. Get a good unit from BD, Goerend, or Spec-Rite. Expect to pay $500-$950 for one. Suncoast is a good one too.

If you have a good converter then you have $2k for a very nice turbo setup. A would think a S300 based 60mm compressor turbo is the ticket. It will handle towing much better than the HX40 and cool better.

Also, a 99.5-2002 Powerstroke intercooler with metal end tanks (avoid the plastic) is a worthwhile upgrade with the new turbo.

And last but not least, a set of Tim's CoolerTubz. He is a member here and his pipes just plain look good under the hood.

HTT you are paying for the name. They were innovators but now you can get just as good of a unit for less money from other sources.

I sent my factory torque converter to PTC in Muscle Shoals Alabama and had them tighten and furnace braze the fins on it and am really happy with it. Less than $300. A lot of of the big names just do the same thing and you pay for the window decal. In drag racing PTC is a big name converter the owner worked for a major converter builder for years.]

X2 ^^ I've heard great things about them, I've not tried them yet but plan on it next time I build anything with an auto. They're not far from me and some of the trans shops around me use them to reman they're converters.

I run the super 40 really like it. made dyno runs between 335 and 375 and 1/4 mi run of 15.3@87 with out the propane ,with my "race" weight of 6775lbs. is pretty accurate calculated. couple times a year tow a 26' 5th wheel and 17' bayliner pulling tandem with no problems.
1991.5 ..getrag super40. 40,horse injectors,4"to 6" exhaust , bhaf 2nd gen intake,custom pin timed to the head ..1/4 14.9@93mph 5,500' with a little propane
