Can someone explain why? KSB related

Postby oldestof11 » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:22 pm

So this morning I start up my truck in the blister cold 7*. I did not drive it between 6pm and 4am when I started it. It was stumbling and could barely run around 4-500 rpms. So I thought the KSB wasn't connected. In the dark I attached a alligator clip to the POS+ side of the battery and clip it to the KSB. Well, I felt the spade was still connected. Pulled it off to attach the jumper wire and the truck shot up to normal operating idle at 850-900rpms. Confused I added the jumper and it stumbled and bucked. Took it off and left it off.

Got to my parents after work to say hi to my bro who was in. Had a minor emergency when my bro realized he cracked the oil pan in his 1.5" lowered Jetta TDI. Frozen pumpkin did it in... So I helped him get it to my grandparents and what not of checking it over. My dad picked us up later.

My truck sat for 5 hours. Without waiting for the grid heaters, I bumped the start with the KSB disconnected. It acted like it was a balmy 60* out.

Last few mornings with the temps in the teens and 20's, it would buck and stumble.

What would cause this with the KSB? Any time I added 12v to the KSB, my idle hardly changed but the trucks started easier.

I am going to cycle the heaters once tomorrow morning and see how it starts for church.

Either the timing is off or you have an early KSB. Does the IP look original?

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I think so. I know its been molested as according to the PO, Scheids did some work to it.

As PToombs suggests, it sounds like it's an earlier 1st gen KSB circuit.

My 90 doesn't do that it runs fine on cold starts. Now my dads 96 on the other hand lol That thing needs to be plugged in anywhere below -5 celcius.

If your static timing is advanced past stock it is likely your KSB is advancing the timing TOO FAR for cold starting. Just leave it diconnected so you run static timing all the time.

AFAIK, the timing is stock. Then again, Schieds did play with it and I ran the quarter at 15.98 @ 83ish mph. According to the CompD calculator, I have 260 engine HP and 240 WHP going by the 15.98 and 6k lbs. I weighed in at 6k even with a half a tank (same as track day) 2 weeks before at a pull. Stock turbo and stock injectors.
