Can you run motor oil in the diesel?

Postby Broncman » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:52 am

I have a pretty good filtration system for my fuel and was wondering if I can take my used motor oil and add it to my fuel tank after my oil changes?

I'd pre filter it to 2 micron before you put it in the tank no matter how good your filter system and only add a couple quarts per fillup. Many say don't do it due to metal shavings and such from wear on bearings and other hard parts being hard on IP pump and injectors.

hey-Hey!!!,
It is not the particulate stuff that worries me, it is the combustion-byproduct acids. I don't like the idear of that sitting in that high-precision, small clearance piston that is the heart of my IP.

Well, used motor oil is a lot cheaper to burn than diesel is now. Not to mention it keeps disposal costs down, if you have to worry about that stuff.

I wouldn't do it either, fuel costs don't really bother me. I use Ford Rangers for that problem.

I would like to be able to burn waste oil/ biodiesel, but it generally takes a bit to get your mix right. It's hard to justify trashing pistons, IPs, injectors, and maybe a whole engine to save a couple bucks on fuel.

I how ever do have some dark arts facts (because some view it as such) on waste and veggie oil as fuel. The Cummins in our pick-ups isn't the ideal platform for alternative fuels. Actually 7.3L PSD's are a good platform because of their HEUI system. The fewer parts questionable fuel touches, the higher the chances that it will go well

pulled an IP apart last night that had run on red #2 for the most of its life, it was black and kind of cruddy. I can imagine what it would look like with UMO mixed in...

bushing on the plunger almost didnt want to move because of the crud on it.

this was a "good running" pump too..

Hence my reluctance to run it in a Cummins. I would think red diesel would be better for our trucks because until recently it was 500 ppm sulfur and taxed diesel is 15ppm. I know there's other stuff in it though...

Injectors will still have problems digesting it, thick veg oil will slow the pintal movement inside the injector. Not good when there's 500psi of oil pressure on top of it at cold idle and up to 3500psi with higher running rpms. With a warm motor that would be a different story. The heat in the head would heat the veg oil and thin it out.

I would have thought so as well... but there was a constant black sheen on everything, all the hard parts are in good shape, but goo'ed up, like soot on the inside of an engine. I'm guessing the sulfur stuff is cleaning the crud out of our fuel stysems, and sending it down streem...

I don't think so alex,I believe farm diesel builds it. I've seen it in Many old tractors glass fuel filter bowls I've worked on. Only way I know of to be rid of it is to not use it. I never run it in anything. Only use I have for it is burning wood pyles.

Stuff he ran was marine stuff, idk if that has something to do with it as well. truck smoked constantly, stock tune, stock everything, but if you lugged it you would think it was AFC-less

I'll never run it now, I've used a few gallons as additive every once in a while, but switched to atf.

Yea, thats true. Guys thin it out with gasoline. 85% WMO 15% RUG
