Cummins swap, performance ?s

Postby Bad93Cummins » Sun Dec 18, 2011 8:51 am

Hey guys been awhile since ive been on 1st gen org, hope yall been doing good.

I have a few questions, im picking uo a 89 12v this saturday fir only $600 ran great when pulled only this is its missing bell housing. Im going to swap it in my Early 1999 F350 & keep my zf6 speed trans.

Plans:
Pump work(Fuel screw turn or 2) & 3200 gov spring
DennyT stage 2 fuel pin
60lb valve springs
Arp studs
AirDog 150
Bhaf
Dual 7" Mitre cut stacks
5x14s
S300
Maybe port&polish(if its worth it)
Maybe cam(if its worth it)
Use my 7.3 intercooler

1. Is 14mm pump reliable enough for DD an towing?

2. Is a cam worth it?

3. S300 62/65/12 work for my setup I want?(would like to do twins later)

4. Valiar 500hp towing clutch hold?

1. I wouldn't bother. It'll be a waste of money for anything but a performance truck, the 12mm should be fine for you

2. I don't know about that. Considering what you have planned for your truck, I would think the $5-700 would be better spent elsewhere. Once you get it to the level where you need the cam, then it'll be worth it.

3. It should work fine. Depending on your budget, you may want to look into getting ahold of a turbo shop with your specific needs and see what they recommend. It looks there are other evolutions of turbo technology past the S300/400s now, but you're gonna pay for them.

4. No idea on the clutch, but as long as you don't abuse them they tend to hold better. If you have plans of playing with the truck on the track, then it couldn't hurt to overbuy a little bit.

1. No. Do not get it.

2. Depends on what your finally HP goal is. If you go for a large set of twins, you would be beneficial.

3. Again, depends on your final HP goal. Now, if it is over 350, you would be better off getting an HX35 for awhile until you can afford a HT3B or for a very quick setup, a 66/74/.91 as a primary.

4. Look into the NMU0087-04 clutch Valair has. Should hold up to daily driving and towing. http://www.valairinc.com/performance/12nv4500.html

I have a S300, 3200 spring, 60 lbs valve springs, 4 inch straight pipe, slightly turned up pump, carter HP4601 externally regulated pump, all in a 78 F350. Preturbo egts stay below 1200 when towing.
Not a drag race truck, but plenty of power for towing and not a sloutch either!

Buddy of mine has a p pumped truck and he drove it to compare the two, he says mine hits harder on the bottom than his. We were in town, so he could not really open it up.

Don't forget the KDP fix...

IMO for a towing truck you,ll be alot better off with a completely stock engine. engine life, fuel milage will be increased tremendously.
