Advise on lift pumps

Postby 142autox » Thu Dec 15, 2011 6:38 pm

I'm not looking for ultimate power. I am going to and already did mess with the pump a bit, rotated the fuel pin and turned down the star wheel. I'm mostly looking for reliability, but I tend to tinker with things even though I know I shouldn't. .

My lift pump appears to be leaking a little externally. It cleaned some crud off of itself I'm guessing from fuel. So I'm going to replace it before I drive it again. I don't want fuel in my fresh oil.

A replacement diaphragm pump looks to be about $65 whereas the low pressure piston is $200. Is it worth the upgrade if I'm only going to do simple pump adjustments? Or will the factory style get the job done?

It's good insurance IMHO. You may save $140, but a new IP is a lot more than that.

Get the low pressure piston lift pump. It is more than $200 for the whole she-bang. You need a new pressure line from filter to lift pump, the spacer, and 2 gaskets.

Well, thanks guys but I think I'm going to just replace the diaphragm pump for now. I promise not to adjust the pump more until spring :thumright: It's getting too cold for another project. I want to do the piston pump but I want to do a simple quick swap to get it back on the road. The stock lp will handle a little pump adjustments won't it? If not I'll rotate the pin back to stock.

The IP is new, I basically bought a new ve pump with a W350 attached. I asked him if he replaced the lift pump when he replaced the IP he didn't so I knew it was past due.

AFC stuff doesn't matter that much in the fueling department, so you should be ok. It's when you start turning on the fuel screw and maxing out the throttle travel that you really start noticing the smoke rolling, and thus the fuel being needed.

Just making sure I'm shaking my finger at the right part. I tried the lever on the lift pump with the cam lobe not holding the lift pump open and it loses pressure after the 1st pump. "Push down lever, pull back up, no resistance on the next. Doesn't seem normal to me, is it?

Is this normal for ve lift pumps or is mine kaput?

well, if it's leaking like you said in your 1st post, then it's probably a good idea as a preventative measure. Any other symptoms that the truck is showing?

Once the pressure on the outlet side has been reached, the spring won't return until it's bled off. It won't have any resistance once that's happened, so it sounds pretty normal. Pretty impressive that it does it in one stroke, but it's not a bad sign.

There aren't really any symptoms. It may be a bit sluggish but I don't honestly know how it should feel, haven't had it long enough. There is never even a hint of smoke but I haven't touched anything except the star wheel and fuel pin. Probably normal, I don't really want a smokey mess of a truck anyway. It starts great on the 1st try everytime but the idle lopes until it warms up, I can usually blip the throttle and it smooths out.

The pump is slightly damp with fuel, not dripping. I was trying the lever to try to pin point the leak to make sure it wasn't just a line but cant see anything. I'm going to play it safe and order a new pump and filter from Geno's.

Why u need a hplp to turn the fuel screw up? I made 225hp with a stock 150xxx mile diaphram pump no afc 366 spring fuel screw bottomed out hx35 and intake and exhaust

You don' t need anything else, but it's a good preventative measure. The VE injection pump is cooled and lubed by diesel fuel. You can pull the inlet pressure down to 0psi easily with just some basic mods to the pump. 0psi doesn't translate well into providing what the pump needs to stay alive.

Also, a HPLP isn't really needed for basic pump mods either. I'd personally say the LPLP capable up decent pump tweaks and 5x14s. That's the point I've noticed mine start laying down a little up top again, but I've only got stock feed lines as well.
