VE Pump modifications... need a hand

Postby wallybanger » Tue Dec 20, 2011 4:38 am

Hey Guys,

Sorry, I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death but I'm having problems finding the exact info I'm after so I'm gonna start a thread on it.

What I am most interested in is advancing the timing on the VE pump. I have read a bunch of stuff from the TDR but they are kinda vague. (mostly from the 2010 buyers guide)

They say that the pump timing is retarded from the factory for emissions reasons but that advancing the timing helps the engine burn fuel more efficiently, increasing fuel mileage and power (Up to a point where bigger injectors are required). Is this correct?

So as it stands, my truck is stock so I would assume it's producing around 160HP. I'm not interested in turning my truck into a fuel guzzling power monster. I would like to turn it up to 250HP MAX but keep the focus on fuel economy.

That being said, how much should the timing be advanced? What is the proper way to do it? (I don't like the idea of measuring 1/8" from scratch to scratch). I'm gonna order a FSM but dunno if the procedure is in there.

I'm thinking advancing the timing is the best place to start and then from there I can dink around with the fuel pin and all that.

Thoughts?

AFAIK, I have stock timing, DennyT stage 1 fuel pin, fuel screw all the way in. I ran a best of 15.99 and got 23mpg on a 500 mile trip. Around town with winter fuel I am seeing 18ish. Summer blend I was seeing 19-21. This is in a 4x4 reg cab with a 5spd.

The weight of my truck plus the time in the 1/4mile put me around 240ish to the wheels or 260 at the engine.

The main thing about fuel mileage is right foot usage.

X2!!! :D

If I run my truck at interstate speeds, mileage in my truck is down to 16-17mpg, but if I'm taking it easy, 55 or so, I can almost hit 20mpg, and that's in a club cab 4x4....

A light foot is the key to success :D With my truck, i got a best of 20.8 mpg putting around, but with a heavy foot i have seen 15-16 mpg. My pile is has stock injectors and turbo, but it has the free pump mods and 3200 rpm spring. Oh yea and i have the 3 speed auto trans in a 5300 lb. 2wd truck. No O/D is a killer

Moving the pump the 1/8 inch won't hurt it a bit. I did mine, then bought the timing tools to check it. It was at 1.65mm of lift. Stock is 1.25 IIRC. I marked the housing, then twisted it up to 2.25, which is a lot! It clattered more at idle, but ran like scalded dog at upper RPMS. My head gasket didn't like it, and my slight leak in the front corner got worse. I turned it back to 1.65, and drove it the rest of the summer before I changed the gasket.
On the highway I can get up to 22-23mpg, and around town 18 or so. If I'm on it, I'm lucky to get 15 some tanks.
