Voltage spike no headlights.

Postby ccoxva » Fri Nov 25, 2011 5:49 pm

I got in my truck the other morning and my volts was reading around 16 volts for around 20 seconds then my headlights went off and hazard lights wont come on but sigs are fine. I still have markers and every other thing works fine??? What you guys suspect first???O yea. After the headlights went out I drove another 2 miles and the volts were still setting a good bit above normal. Shut the truck off and started it back after around 2 minutes later the volts were normal again and still no headlights.....???? Im pretty confused were to start looking. I checked the fuses so far and all good. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The voltage regulator probably spiked and stayed wide open, which likely burned the headlights out.
The Hazards not working tells me you should be looking at fusible links being burnt, too.

Get your alternator tested, replace your voltage regulator and headlights.

Mark.

Update...... Checked the fusable links all were good.Had the alt. checked checked out good, replaced voltage reg, Installed new headlights. Everything has been working good for about 3 weeks now and then I'm right back to the dang thing trying to overcharge again. I'm kinda thinkin about putting a 1 wire chevrolet on it a doing away with this weak wiring and stuff. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

My 91 W350 I had years ago did the same darn thing, I ended up replacing the alternator and the regulator, even though they appeared good, I knew something was wrong somewhere  After all that was replaced, I didn't have a problem after that... ;)

Still stumped...... Replaced the batt. reg and alternator and am still having the same dang problem. Its pulsing from 15 to 16.5 volts??? Any more suggestions. Was a little curious if it might have something to do with my hazard lights because they havnt worked since this problem started????I dont have a wiring diag. to go by so Im kinda pissin in the wind.

I found last night that both field and hot poles on back of the alt had constant power when the key was on. Fixed that and now i think i blowed the regulator when I was testing it with a jumper wire. Neverending...........

Ok guys found my prob. The block on the back of the alt. was burnt in the inside causing 11.8 v on blue and green telling the voltage reg to charge the batt. 23volts!!!! Just letting you guys know for future reference.Like anything else that happens to me its never the obvious. Thanks guys for your input.
