light white/grey haze. Is my IP toast?

Postby diesel_smoke_addict » Tue Jan 17, 2012 12:05 pm

I've just had problems with white haze and "missing" (missing is gone now that I took my M&H timing spacer off) with the truck recently so I've replaced the injectors with DDP stage 2's, taken out the FSS plunger and adjusted the pump settings. It still hazes white/grey a little bit now. I'm not losing coolant, Injectors are new, valves adjusted, has barely or no oil coming out the blow by tube. the only fuel leak I have is from my 2nd gen lift pump set at 12psi. It's drivable now but I can't figure out why it's smokin? :(

My concern now is that I went to try and retard or advance the pump timing to see if it ran better (thinking I my IP timing may have slipped). There was no noise difference that I could hear. So I tried turning it by hand and I got about 1/16" of clunking type play turning it side to side!!! Is that normal? Or should I be concerned?

Oh and I'm already in the process of making a puller for the IP nut to see if the key ways are lined up.

Thanks in advance guys!!!

I have NEVER seen a VE shear the pump drive key. It would have had to have been run with the gear loose for that to happen. If you have rotational play in your pump shaft it is most likely failed plunger return springs especially if your pump is high mileage like 150,000+. To fix that requires a pump tear down and rebuild.

It does have 200,000 on it . . . . Will it hurt the pump if I drive it untill I can get time to fix it?

Do you think I should rebuild it my self (I'd like to do it myself if I can) or is it something I should take the IP to a shop for them to rebuild?

Would I get a rebuild kit with all that stuff from Cummins? And would you happen to know the part number for the rebuild kit?

Thanks so much KTA!

If your return springs are cracked and broken I wouldn't drive it any more then you have too. You probably have small metal bits floating around inside your IP housing...Not good!

You will need a DGK-121 rebuild kit...this is all the seals and O-rings. Then you will need a new set of return springs, not sure of the number for those though...but a common problem so they should know what you want. These can all be bought through your local cummins dealer, or off e-bay, or other on-line sites.

This is what we are taking about...these are from a core IP I picked up cheap.
