fuel shut off/ runaway question

Postby 68f100 » Mon Feb 06, 2012 12:17 pm

I turned my full fuel screw up a lil bit yesterday. Then had to wire up the mechanical fuel shut off. I've searched a few sites but cant find an answer to this question yet. "If the engine 'runs away' will the mechanical fuel shut off kill the motor? Or will fuel pressure be too high for it to cut off the fuel flow?"

I'd like to turn it up some more, but not till i find out about this. I wanna be able to stop the motor from the cab, and not have to jump out and slap a board over my turbo. Lol

Thanks for any help ya'll

Mine has ran away twice and both times I killed it with the key, but I had a buddy standing by with a 2x6. To directly answer your question, sometimes the shut down lever or key works and choking it with a board always works

I think im gonna have to try it. Lol. I gotta know. Cuz i dont want it runnin away while im drivin and not be able to shut it off. (It'll be kinda hard tryin to get a board over the turbo at 60+ mph) lol

WHY on earth are you people even risking doing this?
It's really as simple as backing the idle adjusting screw clear off and adjusting the full power screw in until it idles correctly.

In the end, that's what it ends up being, anyway.

POWAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In all seriousness I wouldn't dare to test a potential runaway without someone right beside the inlet with a board. All it would take of for you to trip or get your shirt caught in the door for your engine to run high enough to damage itself or for you to decide it's not worth standing beside anymore.

While it probably won't rev that fast from a fuel screw adjustment, you'll think the seconds it takes to run around, try the lever and realize it's not working, then get a board over the intake feel like hours as your engine is revving higher and higher.

I have had more than one run away

First time I made some adjustments, fuel, smoke, star and it idled fine,, in fact I drove it a few days .. Then one day going down highway .. I said why not and stomped it
Well it stayed at WOT , felt like linkage was binding.. pulled over as fast and safe as I could,, and used key to shut down. It was not linkage… it ran away,, board would have done me no good… :(

That how close to run away I had it set…. I have since taken everything back to close to stock settings… and I am working on balancing little smoke with more power. :D

I always pull the low idle screw completly out and turn the fuel screw in with the motor running until throttle hangs when revved and backed out til the throttle wont hang. Foolproof imho

This is very helpful! My low idle screw is out all the way now. And i dont know how much my fuel screw is turned in, but it dosnt hang when i let off the throttle. I will try your method.

We have had a few different diesels runaway over the years. Definitely scares the crap out of you and on a hard runaway the key won't kill them.

I have personally had a 8v92TA run away when I was overseas this last time. That old girl was singing quite the tune before she got choked off

Unfortunatley, it was on a reman engine I had to put in my wrecker, the dyno sheet only showed 380hp, and the spec is supposed to be 445. I ran the rack on it and reset everything, just had the rack a little too tight. I brought it back just a hair, adjusted the throttle delay, and the governor, and she ran great the rest of the time I was out there, it was one of the two hardest pulling 8V92's we had in the fleet

Which means it was about equal to a 4BT.
