1993 W250 gets a rebuild Project "The Weapon"

Postby mbdpp » Sun Jan 22, 2012 5:04 pm

Hey everyone,
I have been a member of the forum for a while now, but havent talked a whole lot.
anyways I have a 1993 W250 Extended cab Long Box. Currently it has the G360 Getrag and the NP 205. This weekend I picked up a NV4500 and the matching NV241DHD to go along with it. First thing is, I want to tear the NV4500 apart along with the 241 and make sure everything is good inside, before it goes on the truck. So I am looking for some literature with some specs on the two if anyone can help me out thats step one.

I am going to be putting a new DD clutch in the truck and trying to decide between Valair and South Bend.

A quick run through though, Will I need the NV4500 bell housing? or will the one off the getrag work?

Is there any way to make the NV241DHD work? Will clocking it work and make up brackets for the shifter linkage to work?

I have the drive shafts that went with for the proper output I guess the easiest way will be to cut and weld to make them fit

One thing I do know about the truck right now is that periodically the driver side manual locking hub will engage itself and make a horrid grinding noise, i tried to pull it apart to see what was wrong but I could only pull it apart so far with the tools i had.

Just to let you guys know a list of plans for this truck I have nick named "the Weapon"

Look up rockjeep or smokin93. They are the Dow brothers and clocked a 271 for passenger side drop axles.

Sorry I have no pictures yet, maybe this weekend.
So it looks like I will be doing the NV4500 swap on monday. On Tuesday of this week my Getrag sthi the bed and will no longer more under its own power. I ordered a rebuild kit for the 4500 and 241DHD on wednesday along with a dual disc clutch and hydraulic kit from South Bend but none of it made it here for the weekend although I paid for next day air shipping.

One thing I have found out already is that the 241DHD is not clockable so I will have to swap out my front Dana 60 for a 94 and up dana 60 and convert it to a leaf spring style suspension.

Has anyone done the swap already? I am only looking for what you guys use for the new tranny mount? I have the one from the getrag if it can be made to work, and I also have the stock one off the NV4500.

I am curious if the hydraulic kit will work, its for a 94-98. One guy at South Bend said it will work, another said it will not, so I am just hoping for the best.

Does anyone know of a good rebuild manual for the NV4500, I have experience with transmissions, just looking for some specs mostly to ensure its done properly.

Thanks

Ford f350s before 93 (????) Had 60s driver side drop leaf spring setups I do believe.

The 97 and down Ford F-350 trucks have leaf spring and driverside drop Dana 60's in them. That may be easier for you to find one of those.

The Ford Dana 60 that I have came from a 95 and it won't work the spring mount s are out to wide. There isn't enough room to move them in. If i remember right they are out like 1.5" to wide and the pumpkin is to close to move them in fare enough.2nd gen fronts are hard to find around me that a don't have the CAD on them. Plus you will loose your lockouts.

Just use your 205!!!!!! way easier than swaping a frontend, none of the front ends are gonna be bolt on, there all gonna require a lot of fab work......
your kingpin dana 60 is way better than the ball joint 2nd gen dodge plus you wanna keep your locking hubs..

if the nv4500 came out of a dodge cummins then your 29 spline 205 will bolt up, use the advance adapters g360 to nv4500 swap bellhousing kit and you retain your stock starter and hydraulics, youll just have to figure out the tranny mount....easy day :D

So a little update sence it has been over a week since i last posted anything. I am getting the Dana 70 from a second gen back today (has the 9/16 wheel studs) and also an updated and rebuilt dana 60 front axle with 9/16 wheel studs too  If any one wants, you can update your wheel studs that is pretty easy. I found a part number of: Dorman 610-180. They will press right into our hubs and rotors.
I got the transmission and t case back on friday and over the weekend I got them all cleaned up and managed to paint them too, they are looking sharp!

I would like to post some pics. Does anyone know how? Currently they are on my phone though.

I've got a photobucket account. It gives you an email address to send the pictures from your phone to your account. Then just copy the image code and paste it in the response box.
