Twins or Triples?

Postby Kasper Cummins » Wed Mar 07, 2012 4:44 pm

I just sold my turbo so I'm shopping for something bigger. I have notice lot of people are going to twins. My first question is what would be a good size to use with my h1c for twins. My second question is size turbos would I need for triples if I want 400-500HP?
I know twins would cool my hp I'm shooting for but building triples sounds fun. I can fab and tig weld so building twins or triples wont be impossible for me, but I know it will take alot of time.

If you do triples, the key aspect to sizing is the combined CFM of the 2 atmosphere turbos to the same size of a standard compound/twin build. So if a S475 flowed 1100CFM, you need 2 turbos at 550CFM to equal the 1 big one.

Then the top turbo should be the same size or slightly bigger as the best compound setups have the secondary turbo being 1/2 the size in CFM.

i'd do a h1c or hx35 (gated) paired with a s475 if going twins,

Or 3 h1c(s) with the manifold having a wastegated 16cm housing and the two atmospheres 12cm wastegated.

What if I used 2 hx35s with 12cm exhaust housings and my h1c with a 16cm wastegated exhaust housing? I have an idea where I can get 2 hx35s.

I could and it would be simpler but I think I could get 2 hx35s for the same price as a ht3b. Im not sure what a ht3b goes for these days. With hx35s I could upgrade to 60mm covers if I needed more air.
has anybody used that Hot Jet coating company? They have a 2500*F coating that should work nice for exhast parts.

TBH The only things I see being more complicated in a triple setup are oil feeds, oil returns, and downpipe routing(If you've got a 4x4).

I can see the oil returns being a giant bitch since 3 Holsets are going to put out a butload of oil. It'll ultimately be up to you though. If you've got the time and resources, triples won't be any harder to put together than a twin set.

Triples are cool, but I don't see them being useful on a truck like ours unless you're just wanting to flex your fabrication muscles.
