Picked up my first cummins for $800 !!!

My dad knew the guy and the guy was just ready for a new truck, I've got $150 bucks left to pay and I'll bring it home, It's gonna need fenders, rockers, and patches welded in on the bed, but once that's done I'm more than likely gonna paint it silver. But I've got a few questions, He said he has always ran john deere oil, and changes oil, fule filter, and oil filter at 5,000 miles, But he said he doesn't let it idle, There is an oil leak on it and he doesn't know where, he also said that when it idles the leak is worse, So I'm hoping it's just a gasket somewhere but I'll get some pics up once I get it home also What type of gauges will I need. I plan on turning the pump up, and something with the exhaust 8 or 10 inch rolled tip. Thanks

Welcome first off. You will need boost, pyro minimum and if its an auto a trans temp gauge is always nice. As for the huge tip unless your one of those flat bill diesel ricer douche bag you don't need it unless you want to look stupid.

Damn, guys, ease up.

I'm sure there was a nicer way to drop what some people think when they see a giant tip like that. Some people will think it looks awesome, but those same people are generally the ones in YouTube videos blowing smoke on pedestrians. It's a hard fight to differentiate ourselves from them, since people never notice us unless we're doing something wrong.


If you plan on working the truck hard, then a temp gauge for the auto is a good idea. If not, I think a fuel pressure gauge would be a more useful gauge. I don't have either of them, so take my opinion for what it's worth, but trans temp on a play truck isn't that important.

I was reading and it seems like a fuel pressure gauge and a boost gauge is what most people run ?

So what's the best place to get a set of gauges, I was thinkin the dual pod from geno's garage and a pyrometer gauge and boost gauge ?

Ive heard that the pillar pods point the gauges toward the roof too much. Ive seen several use the single gauge pods that you can mount anywhere on the pillar because you can angle them toward you.

Pyro and boost, and a fuel pressure is nice to have even if you only install it once in a while to check pressure. Most of us with trucks that are turned up pretty good have them mounted permanent.

Ok, I'll pick up the boost and pyro gauge and eventually a fuel pressure gauge, but I'm havin a little trouble finding gauges for a first gen does it matter ? sorry for all the questions this is my first diesel

Nope autometer and ispro will work in any vehicle.

I got my Isspros from genos, decent pricing and good service. I used the gauge pods and put them on the left side of the dash near the pillar. Used the supplied double sided tape instead of the screws. Works pretty good!
