400k too much?

Postby revemup15 » Sat Mar 17, 2012 6:12 pm

Hey guys I have a truck with 400k and wanted to know if that's too many miles to mod.... like maxing pump, injectors, Turbo and so on.... should I get one with less miles or is this one OK.... thanks

I wouldn't worry a lot about the motor, just the trans and diff(s).
Five bucks says the engines head gasket pukes thou  it being that old and all. Then again there have been more than a few folks with less than half that mileage have theirs go.

This truck runs better than any 1st Gen I've seen

I'm just figuring that once fuel is added the amount of boost will increase. That can lead to the fire rings have compression push past them.

By the way, what's the trucks year, what trans?

I guess the next question is how many have you seen? ;)

Just mod away on it. If you crank the pump you're going to have to upgrade your lift pump and turbo. If you upgrade your turbo you're eventually going to need studs.

If you're talking about the bottom end, then I wouldn't sweat it. Put in an accurate oil pressure gauge and keep an eye on the blowby tube. If everything stays peachy then enjoy it. 8)

That part is deceiving. You make it sound like it stops with studs, when the truth is its a never ending viscous cycle

Justin is a liar, don't listen to him.

If you're not a quitter, you can just be happy with a VE, studs, and some o-rings if you're nervous(on the reliability front) . If you're not really comfortable with your sexual orientation, you're going to need a P-pump, too.

Instead of admitting defeat and living with the fact that head gasket "is going to go", do some preventative maintenance and run a torque wrench across all of the head bolts.
After this many years, I'm certain that things have relaxed and that's part of why they blow the headgaskets when you "juice" them up.

Mark.

My '92 was oozing in the front corner and I retorqued the front of the head and it lasted 3 or 4 more years until I turned the timing way up. Then it started oozing again. When I replaced it the gasket was disintegrated in that spot.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
