i am looking to install a tach in my truck but it dosnt have the pickup on the crank. i havent found much online about it

They make one with a pickup that gets clamped around the alternator, i have one and it works great
1990 dodge W250 cummins 6 speed. 4in diamond eye, a turbo,and a pump :D

i was just reading about the alt pickup ones, i guess once you set them up you need a hand held diesel tach meter to calibrate it.

The one i have from isspro uses two magnets glued to the balancer and a sensor.

I have the Autometer one that straps the sensor to the alternator on my Toyota turbo deisel powered '57 Landrover....works great...

I also run the Autometer unit,I had issues with that needle bouncing bad!Took some trial and error to find the sweet spot on the alt,then the needle hold steady!

I parked mine next to a buddys that has the crank trigger and we just tweaked the idle screw till it sounded just like his truck to our ears and feel then calibrated the tach to 800rpm@ idle,called that good to go 8)
