3,200 rpm spring (do I need it?)

Postby Diesel Dawg » Mon Feb 11, 2013 12:31 am

With whats in my sig. Do I need the 3200 rpm spring? It will run 80+mph so I dont need any more speed per se. But was wondering if it helped driveability at speed. I know alot of guys put them in w/o OD to get to highway speeds but I have OD and 3.54s. Just wondering. I have one just dont know if I should install it?

I'll be the one dissenter here. ;)

Do you really NEED this spring?
"NEED" is a debatable term.
Would the truck "get up to speed" better with it? Yes.
The OP has already stated that his truck will run 80 mph without it, so aside from making the truck GET THERE faster, are there really any improvements? No.

Everyone seems to want to "go fast", but I've noticed noone seems ABLE to do T&D when something is wrong.
Going fast is easy, let's see you fix it when it breaks. :P

Makes the cummins WAKE up,it really made a huge differance on my truck.Another product I would put in there withthis is the M&H timing spacer...not as cheap as the spring but again WOW really woke the truck up!

Before you buy it, remove the high speed screw. It looks just like the idle adjustment screw but it limits how much you can pull the throttle back. Pull that screw out and take the slop out of your go pedal. That will yield another 2-400 rpms.

Doing the 3200 spring is cheap and not entirely hard. A reseal kit is a good idea if you are diving into the pump.

Did that one on my old carhauler.
Before if I ran it flat-footed, with the linkages tight, it'd run at 65mph TOPS, with 4.56 gears.
Pulled the high speed screw, 75mph, no problem, still with 4.56s.

4.56 in a cummins carhauler?!?! Probably moved off the line quick but that sounds like an awful ratio on the highway!

Surprisingly, it wasn't as bad as it might seem.

I still stand by my "NEED IT" comment. For only $20 it is a much better add-on than many other things that cost much more.

Very few of us drive a 1st gen because we want a stock, slow 160hp cummins, we drive them because they are unique and easily turned up for small amounts of cash.

What I like about the 3,200 spring is it compresses the "defuel" RPM range. With the stock spring it seems like the truck starts defueling really early in the RPM band before full defuel. With the 3,200 spring defueling doesn't happen until much closer to 3,200.
I think it really wakes the pump up. That combines with a "cut" cone and an advance in timing make a big difference. Gotta watch the exhaust temps though.
