Bigger injectors will retard the timing slightly.
More volume=slower response= retarded timing.
You should also play with the timing, if/when you put on bigger injector lines, or if you add volume to the fuel system anyplace after the plunger.

One tooth advance is 10° advanc, thats 0 to E, if you then retarded the pump then you should have your timing a fuzz lower than stock. At least with the marks on my case thats how it would be.

For the record... if your gear is at stock marks... the pump can be rotated advance or retard about 8 degrees... advancing the gear a tooth is 10 degrees... so if you advance you gear a tooth and retard it all the way is the equivalent to a 1/8 bump ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Things have been going eerily good. Well I have been brought back to reality. I got the radiator installed and the belt put on. Also got the power steering fluid hooked up. I backed it out side little it run for about 10 minutes and then all the sudden it started missing. Barely ran for a minute and then died. It was acting like ran out of fuel. So I checked the fuel filter and it was full. I then pulled the feed to the pump and it was flowing a lot of fuel. When I went to crank it again I cracked the fuel lines and airiated fuel was coming out and it didn't have near the pressure it should. It will normally squirt all the way onto the fender. Now it is just bubbling out. I feel like something in the pump is the problem. Also it is leaking fuel out the vent on the diaphragm body. Anybody got any clues? It is so depressing.

Start with the basics, fuel supply, tighten fittings, make sure the FSS hasn't gone tits up on you, etc.

Your first comment reminds me of when I went to CA and got the 1993 I drove back, which I put a severely leaking '96 Cummins back into.
It went so quick and easy, my comment to the guy helping me was "Val, I think this engine is junk, this is just going TOO easy!"
I was right!

What is the FFS? By the way I pulled the fuel solenoid out of the pump and tested it without that and it wouldn't crank.

FFS? You must have read it before I edited.
I meant FSS, which you already said you checked.

Sorry to say, but you'll probably have to tear back into it and see what broke. :(

Are these VE pumps hard to rebuild? I am no master mechanic but i would say I am fairly above average. I rebuild all my own engines, transmissions (autos and manuals), and differentials. I checked on a rebuild from City Diesel in town and they said $500-550. I asked about the rebuild kit and he said $20. Any good PDFs or DVDs? What concerns me is if the pressure have to be set on some flow meter I don't have.

There was a CD on Ebay at one time that showed the rebuild of a vw pump, pretty good info on it,lots of picks on here of folks doing the reseal too.

I guess my biggest problem will be finding the broken part.

Just out of sheer curiosity, have you check the fuel flow thru the pump? Like maybe the supply might have stopped up with some trash there at the fitting in the pump. Pull the return off the pump and look and see what comes our. Long shot I know but....... Sound weird that it would just tear up now
