TACHOMETERS

Does anyone have any insight on tachs for my 92 dodge 5.9ctd?
I have had a auto meter in it. it's a 2888 model I think or similar.
It has failed. I would like to put one in that does NOT get signal from the alternator. Also it doesn't need to be 5" in diameter.

if yours is a 92 it should be able to use the isspro tach which uses the factory wiring and (I assume) gets its reading from the factory crank sensor. You could use a factory tach too if you can find one.

My trucks build date is 12/ 1991.
I saw the TINY TACH website and there tach gets a reading from the injector line by using a transducer to read the 'pulses'.
does anyone know how accurate these are?

well i went the cheap route and bought a cheap gasser tach, mine is a sunpro super tach II, just set it on 4 cyl and your good to go, except when its cold in the cab, but once the tach warms up it reads really accurite, also you just tap into the exsisting harness under the dash.

I use a tach called "Tiny Tach"
Digital to 10,000 rpm and has hour meter etc in it
Costs about $80.

Best part is it clamps to an injection line to read the pulses and two wire hookup for power

Only downside is no internal illumination for night driving

i have a timing module made by snapon that does the same thing ... it is very acurate in it's reading of the injection "pulse " ...

figuring out when the fuel actually decides to burn is another matter .

R8912

Postby Ace » Thu Jan 17, 2008 4:32 pm

I got a crank sensor kit from egauges.com for like $50 at the time, IIRC. Part R8912. Has a couple magnets you glue to the crank damper and a sensor bolted on with an oil pan bolt.

Wired up an ISSPRO 2 1/16 tach I found on eBay with it. Been rock solid and trouble-free for going on 2 years now.

my '92 Ex-cab has a tach wire under the dash. Dodge didn't use them because the tach was so jumpy until the engine warms up, engineers were worried people would complain...

I've had a few factory tach trucks and they've always been rock solid.

I run the Isspro with with their wiring harness. If yours is a 92 it should have the factory plug under the dash for the wiring. Super easy to do and the tach movement is smooth and consistent, never noticed any jumpiness.
