Lift Pumps (I know, beaten to death)

Postby bmw4aaron » Sat Dec 28, 2013 7:06 pm

I've done so much searching and reading about lift pumps, I'm even more indecisive than when I started. I have determined I want a good old fashion mechanical piston style pump. But not sure which way to go. As far as my MOD list goes its pretty basic right now. 4" DE exhaust and a DennyT Stage 2 pin and 2 turns on the AFC star wheel. Not really looking to do much else until gauges are installed. My plans for the truck is nothing more than to drive it on the weekends and tow an occasional car trailer, BUT I do live in the mountains so EGT's are something I want to keep low (hence my desire to keep the 18cm^2 housing).

I've always lived by the saying "It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it." Basically at any time my plans could change and right now I'm leaning towards a 2nd gen piston style high pressure pump with a regulator. Who has this setup and what regulator are you using? Seems like I really should only do this if I plan to P-pump it down the road.

Or should I stick with the low pressure version and make sure I get the pump from Cummins and not Delphi (or whoever makes it). Also, I could never get a clear idea of what people saying when they mention "agri" pumps. Are they the same as the low pressure pump or something else all together?

I'd go with the low pressure piston pump from The Hungry Diesel.com. It's a great kit, using Cummins parts. No need to regulate it, and if you go the P pump route down the road, just swap the operating spring out.

With your mods, the 12 psi pump would suffice just fine. A free spring swap is in the "warranty", if one is pulling the pump down too far. I run the 15 psi pump on my truck and with all of my mods, I pull it down to about 6 psi right now.

That's the exact pump that Diesel Auto Power sells. It works, but is not much of a volume upgrade over stock.

I've sold a lot of pumps to folks who were wanting to upgrade from that Delhpi pump because with stock injectors and pump mods were pulling it down to 0 psi.

You should go this route then. It's like $100 more than a LPPLP. I discovered my 6x14's would pull the LPPLP down to 0 when I went to twins. Once you go P-pump, bye bye regulator.
