Centrifuging engine oil

Postby 1992gen1_fan » Thu Mar 20, 2014 6:31 pm

I was thinking about buying a bench oil centrifuge to clean soot out of oil. My trucks oil is black within a couple hundred miles after an oil change. Been that way since I bought the truck. Would draining the oil every thousand miles or so and running it through the centrifuge and dumping it back in hurt anything providing I did a clean job of it?

A centrifuge would be very helpful. I would install an onboard unit.

I've seen those onboard units. That would be nice but I was thinking I could use a bench unit for other engines like my tractor ect.

Is there any chance that you could remove something vital from the oil? How could the centrifuge know to remove only carbon solids but not other smaller and invisible to the eye ones?

Exactly what I'm wondering. If it was about the same rpm as the onboard units I assume it would be ok??

I don't know specifics, but a friend of mine just bought a centrifuge and it not only will strip out metals, it will strip out all additives as well.

edit: oh, he plans to burn the waste oil in his truck as fuel.

I think you're right - I'm guessing dump it back in means the tank....in that case I would run it through a couple t-shirts and goooo

Ok, thats what I was wondering. Maybe just better off pumping it through a few very fine filters instead. Or get an onboard unit that does'nt rob the additives. Thanks for the input.

I just got an idea.. I have an old milk/cream sepperator That I was thinking to use for a centrifuge, ever heared of using one with oil? Might work for WMO. If I figured it correct, turning the handle one revolution per second spins the cone 10,800 rpm. :o Its like 180:1 ratio.

What are you trying to gain? Re-using oil can't be cost effective given what's at stake with the oiling system...

Soot and particle removal. I know soot in the oil is expected on an old worn engine but would be nice to keep the oil somewhat clean through the duration of its change interval. I eventually might just add a couple more filters to a bypass setup would probably be safer sounds like. The last time I did an oil test oil test, the additives were still good but there was alot of soot. I'm going to send a sample to test the oil at the current mileage and see how it looks.

As for the milk separator idea, I was thinking of using it for WMO as a fuel in an old diesel tractor ect. not re-use in the crank case ;)

I believe centrifuge oil cleaning to be a proven method providing longevity to expensive engines used in transportation, construction and heavy industry. While I have not read a lot about it, I do not believe it will strip out needed additives. When properly used its well established to be effective. If you find evidence contradicting please point it out.
