435's with a stock turbo?

Postby jimmyt83 » Thu Feb 21, 2008 10:45 am

I'm in the middle of a cummins conversion in my '94 Chevy using a 5.9 IC out of a '93 D250. Once I get her runnin, I am planning on starting the upgrades, and want to start with the fuel screw, a custom cut fuel pin, and injectors. My biggest question at this point is whether or not I can run 435's (or bigger??) with the stock turbo without running into dangerous territory. I don't mind a little smoke...just concerned with EGT's...I plan on upgrading to twins as soon as I can afford to...just not right away.

I will have a boost gauge and pyro (pre-turbo).

Thanks,
Jimmy

You probably can't tow without egt problems on that setup, but you could drive it fine if you can control your right foot. 8)

since your doing a convertion why dont you put on a hx40 or s300 and a four inch exhaust then you have the top turbo and the exhauset done for the twins

then you wont have problems with your etgs and it cheap

you could run 435's but you will need water to keep it cool and nirous to clear up all of the smoke.

Ok, so what sized HX-40 or S300 would be good matches for these injectors, as well as be feasable once I upgrade to twins? I don't want to run water or nitrous right away unless someone could point me in the right direction to building my own water/meth system. I've got a couple of months before this will all end up being a reality...I'm just now getting all the pieces together for the conversion, and will start it in about 3 or 4 weeks or so. Don't worry guys...I'm planning on finishing the conversion before throwing money at the expense of bigger injectors and turbo...just want to start my research now.

Sorry for the Newbieness...I've been driving the underpowered 6.5 for the last 5 years, and am just getting into the whole Cummins scene.

Their only hard to get if your looking at salvage yards. Lots of places will sell you a new or rebuilt S300 but there about $500 more than a similar condition HX40 from what I've seen.

a 64-71 s300 with a 14 or 16cm housing will work great so will a 16cm hx40. the s300 just offers alot more air flow and is more efficient at higher boost levels

before you buy any parts you need to decide what you are going to be doing with the truck

are you going to tow at all?

if so how heavy are ya talking and how much of the time will you be towing?

if not is this just a toy or a dd?

makes a difference for what parts i would suggest

that charger ford recommended for example, the 64/71-16, wont tow very good but would be great on a toy. then again, its a pretty big charger to end up in the top position for twins unless you are gonna be making some pretty big power.

with the big stuff you compromise bottom end

and i would be more worried about blowing the turbo up than the egts and motor damage they can contribute to with your questioned combo

5x14's are bigger than pods and pods were too big for my h1c

I doubt I'll be doing much towing...if anything, my 16' ski boat, but it's not all that heavy. The truck is also getting about 8-10" of lift and a set of 38's under her. I'm really looking to build a toy out of the 'ol beast. She'll have the Dodge A518 tranny and I plan on either 3.73's or 3.96's in the rears. The tranny, I'll be sending off to Suncoast for their rebuild.

I'm also contemplating just going with a big single, and making up for turbo lag with a nitrous system. Any suggestions here??

Thanks,
Jimmy

i would forget about any 62/65 or 65/71 and think BIG

pm josh your number, he has some ideas for a system just as you are describing that sounded good to me

i have no experience where you are talking about going to

good luck - it sould be crazy fun
