How to make a Cummins efficient?

Postby cummins king » Mon Mar 17, 2008 7:10 pm

Well, do to the rise in fuel prices, How do we make our trucks effiecnt?
In threory these things should be able to run 30+mpg.

Some super efficient injectors would be good
good quick spooling turbo,
big exaust
good cam
special pump

If you have any ideas lay them out

I get an 'extra' 2 mpg by driving 60-65 vs 72-75

My truck hit 20 for the first time since I have owned her.

Bump timing a touch. Good injectors. Free flowing intake/exhaust.

I CHANGED MY TURBO FROM AN HIC TO HX35 AND LOWERED THE RPM'S A LITTLE BIT AND WITH MY CAMPER WEIGHT OT ONE TON PLUS AROUND TOWN I AM GETTING 16 + AND ON FREEWAY DRIVING UNDER 70 AT 1700 RPM'S I GET 20+ I THINK THE TRICK IS TO LOWER YOURE RPM'S AND TO SPOOL FASTER ,IT HAS WORKED FOR ME ,HAVE TO RESEARCH IF A LARGER EXAUST WOULD HELP AND WHETHER IT WOULD JUSTIFY THE COST.

I think a good set of matched twins, good edm'd sticks, a ported head(intake and ex sides both) some good free flowing ic tubes with a dual inlet on the head, a good cac, free flowing ex and intake, and a 5spd or a lock up auto should be the formula to good fuel mileage and power. Now take that combo and drive hard and have fun with 14mpg or less but drive it normal and then you will see 20 plus. oh i forgot a cam in that mix too. As much as I dont like Banks stuff I have some friends that have gotten some very good economy improvements with the complete air flow packages they offer so it just proves that the airflow to burn the fuel will make it go farther. I have found that my truck tends to do a little better running red dye?? I am not sure if its the place I buy it vs the other fuel in towns quality but i have heard red dye is a different formula.

Dont forget a big rear end that came with the 727 auto. 3.07 and a 5spd was getting rbtrettctd 21 mpg on the free way and keeping up with some Dmax's. Take that you over electricalized wanna-be diesel V8's

I'm really hoping that the ats converter is going to make my auto get close to the 21 that my getrag truck got.

Put a 2x4 under the foot feed!
I'm getting high 19's around town with POD's by taking it easy and coasting where I can.
