timing???

Postby 1991cummins » Wed Aug 13, 2008 5:17 pm

hey guys...

i want to advance my timing... but... umm ... i dont really know what i am doing... i know it has to do with physically advancing the pump, similar to advancing the timing on a gasser with a distributer... right??? but i dont know what to do...

any info would be great....
thanks a bunch

Loosen the 3 bolts that hold the pump to the timing cover, loosen the one on the bottom, rear. And I like to loosen the lines, so they don't have strain on them. Push the top of the pump towards the head about 1/8 of an inch. Tighten the bolts and lines. Simple.
Sometimes the pump moves really hard. I put big channel locks on mine to twist it. I might have used a 2x4 to pry with on another one. ;)

I was going to try this when I was doin' the other stuff this weekend, but I decided to wait until I have the time to tidy up the wiring that seems to be all over the place. Plus I need to find a wrench to get to the nut near the block.

Let us know how it goes!

1/8th is quite a bit! There is about 1/2 inch to the head, most trucks are different. You will notice reduced EGT's, reduced boost, less smoke. But the truck will be quicker, and faster.

I never did figure out the whole " x degrees = how much mm of spill port" thing.

Not sure that this pic will help, but maybe it'll help you envision where the 3rd one is.

I've read that it takes "U" shaped wrench. I'm sure someone has a pic a some info about it.

wow ok awesome... that pic helped a bunch thanks... why is the pump so freakin hard to turn... and is there another bolt on the other end of the pump right next to the shut off sylonoid??? cause it looks like there is but it might not be necisary to loosen up...

My trucks all have brackets near the inj lines. I think you can loosen it fairly easily. Just one bolt. Outside of that, inj lines, and maybe the main fuel supply line. It's probably not helping. There is a coupling up under there, that might make it easier if you loosen it too!

Good luck!

The 4th bolt is on the rear of the pump. See the bracket that bolts to the pump head, just outside the lines? The bolt is on the bottom of that.
Sometimes they turn harder than a SOB. That's why I used a board on mine, more leverage.

you will most probably need a s shaped wrench to get to the bottom bolt, that s the only was i could get to it. i tried the u shaped wrench but that didn't work. i just advanced my pump yesterday and could tell a big difference. feels much quicker .i lost about 3 psi of boost and the egts were considerably lower. i got the pump really really close to the head, to where you can't fit yer pinky finger between them. is that a little too much?

The stock timing marks are on the left-most bolt; there's a line on the IP flange and a line on the timing case. The idea is to move the IP so that the IP line is 1/8" above the timing case line.

my pump had been replaced for the recall, the pump on there now dose not have a timing mark on it, so i don't know if it was set at stock to begin with. i have seen a few other truck around these parts like this.
