Advancing the timing a little bit would be a good idea, I think.. but the upgrading the lift pump makes alot of sense to me. I think I will do that.. Maybe take my denny T out until I get a turbo and lift pump. I think a turbo, lift pump and injectors and I will be done.. we will see..

just blew out my shut off solenoid.. bummer

I wouldn't take the DennyT cone out. I'd back out the power screw a little bit (it'll save you another shut off solenoid) until you get a turbo and injectors.

A piston pump is a very good upgrade. If you need installation help, I have a link that is very helpful. This picture shows everything you'll need, and the part numbers.

I'm not sure how accurate the part numbers are now.

As far as I know, Cummins and Case are still the places to go for one. Case used to be cheaper, but when I checked a couple months ago, the Cummins unit was cheaper.

I think a 2nd gen pump and regulator would be what you want, first it's about the same money, second a few more mods and you will still be able to pull the low preshure pump down, ask Richie. third i checked three months ago and the Case/IH dealer here was over $350

Some of my issues of drawing down a low pressure piston pump may be my stock supply lines and pick up. I can draw it down to 3 psi. For sure it is way better then the wimpy diaphram. I only saw 3.5 psi with that and drew it down to 0 pretty easy. I am sure my 89 ( stock lp ) is pulling to 0 also ( gauge still on the dresser ).

i backed my starwheel out about a full turn to turn down the mid-boost smoke.. it seemed to help a little bit, until i put in the denny t. do you think if i turned the starwheel up a bit more it could actually get to the point where it is slowing down my spool up?

On my M2 pin YES. It sure made it a dog with the starwheel up real hard. Almost made it hard to take off. Would mash the throttle and it was a turd. Once the pin dropped it was smoke city. :D In my case with the pin up there wasn not enough fuel to even think about building boost.
