the truth comes when its cold

Postby T.winegar » Mon Dec 21, 2009 12:01 am

so, I have done all the stuff listed on my sig. the biggest modification was the pump rebuild and turn up.

It never idled normal after he did the rebuild. what happens is it idles at 750 when it is warmed up. but, until I get the whole beast gets warmed up, it idles from 4-500rpm, barely staying alive.
now, its zero degrees outside, and it won't start and continue to run. sometimes it just doesnt' even start. I have to push the pedal down to keep it running at all. aren't these trucks suppose to start no matter how cold it is? I know our other two 91's do for sure! any situation!!

my mileage has also gone to hell. used to be 18-19 no matter what. now its barely 16. oh yes, and when it actually starts and continues to run, it kicks out white smokey exhaust until its warmed up.

whats the deal? timing? I remember when we installed the pump back on the truck, the whole mess got mixed up because the "key" fell out and we blindly installed it.

You need to remove the pump and get a new woodruff key installed. Then line up the marks on the pump flange and gear housing, maybe putting the pump mark 1/16-1/8" higher.

Your white smoke and dropped MPG definitely lead me to think timing.

woodruff key? I'm not real good with all the parts of the ve pump. It was the half moon key that can fall out if you don't stick it on the engine just right and slide it into the slot.

as far as timing, I've heard of many ways of adjusting it. how would you do it, or what is the best way?

I really don't want to take the pump off.... :? no time until summer.

My 91 does the same thing. You have to give it some throttle to start and hold it until it warms up or it won't idle on its own. White smoke until warm too. Pump has never been off or timing changed. Sat all last winter because of fuel gel. Having this trouble ever sense. No change in fuel mileage.

I'm thinking internal leak. Mine from the gel, your from the overhaul. O-ring?
